Big change coming to Walmart online pick-up orders nationwide

Walmart announced packaging changes on Thursday designed to cut down on waste. Among the changes is one that will impact those using the nation’s largest retailer’s popular grocery pick-up service.

Customers will soon have the choice to opt-out of single-use plastic bags for their online pickup orders. Walmart expects complete rollout nationwide by the end of the year.

“Early tests indicate promising adoption rates and potentially helping eliminate millions of single-use bags each year from circulation,” the company said in a statement.

In another change, Walmart said “nearly all” items shipped from its fulfillment centers, stores and marketplaces will arrive in recyclable paper bag mailers. The change is expected to eliminate 65 million plastic bag mailers or more than 2,000 tons of plastic from circulation in the U.S. by the end of the current fiscal year.

Walmart is also transitioning to what’s called “right-sized packaging technology” in about half of its fulfillment centers. The technology helps create a cardboard package that’s custom fitted to the order. By eliminating unuse space in a box, the need for packing filler is cut by 60% while reducing waste caused by oversized boxes by 26%, Walmart said.

Online shopping customers will also be able to request consolidation of multiple items into fewer boxes.

“These efforts are part of Walmart’s commitment to becoming a more regenerative company, which means prioritizing social and environmental issues that are relevant to its business, important to its stakeholders and issues where Walmart can make a positive difference,” the company said.

Walmart operates more than 10,500 stores and websites in 20 countries with some 2.1 million employees.
