Big 12 to add Arizona, Arizona State, Utah in 2024

Arizona, Arizona State and Utah will officially join the Big 12 in 2024, conference officials announced late Friday.

The announcement that the three schools will leave the Pac-12 next year came on the same day Oregon and Washington officially became members of the Big Ten. As previously announced, Colorado also will join the Big 12 and USC and UCLA will become members of the Big Ten in 2024.

“We are thrilled to welcome Arizona, Arizona State and Utah to the Big 12,” Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark said. “The Conference is gaining three premier institutions both academically and athletically, and the entire Big 12 looks forward to working alongside their presidents, athletic directors, student-athletes and administrators.”

The Big 12 will be a 16-team league in 2024, with Texas and Oklahoma off to the SEC and Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah coming on-board. BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and Central Florida entered the Big 12 this year, also joining Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech and West Virginia.

Arizona and Arizona State had been part of the Pac-12 (previously the Pac-8 and Pac-10) since 1978. Utah joined the Pac-12 in 2011, having previously been a member of the WAC and Mountain West.

Meanwhile, the Pac-12 is down to Oregon State, Washington State, California and Stanford as guaranteed members for 2024. It’s possible those four schools could join forces with or merge into the Mountain West Conference.

In a statement issued late Friday, Pac-12 officials called the departure of Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, Washington and Utah “very disappointing.”
