A new poll shows while the upcoming presidential election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump is close, the presumptive Republican nominee far outpaces his Democratic rival among a key group of voters.

ActiVote’s June 21 poll shows Trump ahead of Biden by 3.2% (51.6% to 48.4%) in a two-way matchup. In a three-way race between Trump, Biden and Robert Kennedy Jr., Trump’s lead falls to 1.6%.

But perhaps the most concerning figure for the Biden camp is Trump’s performance among independents in a two-candidate race. As expected, Biden is the preferred pick for 92% of Democrats, with Trump the choice for 94% of Republicans, the poll showed. Among Independents, however, Trump held a commanding lead – 61% to 39%.

The poll showed Trump was the strongest among rural voters, older voters and men. Biden outpolled his challenger among urban voters, younger voters and women. Trump won white voters in the poll while Biden won Black voters, though pollsters point out his 83% vote share among African-Americans is smaller than seen in 2020. Latino vote was split evenly.

When Kennedy was factored in, Trump’s percentage among Independents fell to 47% but still outpaced Biden at 28% and Kennedy at 25%. Kennedy polled best among those 18-29 and among Black voters.

The ActiVote poll was conducted June 5-21 among 2,029 likely voters with a margin of error of 2.2%.
