Beth Thames: Reading books makes us more human and more humble

Here’s a question for Alabama readers, those who have a book by the bed and another in the briefcase or backpack: Are book clubs extinct, remnants of a past when people read more and emailed less, when 24 hour television shows didn’t boom from every family room, when checking out books from the library was as routine as going to the grocery store or filling up your gas tank?
