Bessemer woods fire visible for several miles now under control

A Bessemer brush fire that swept through a wooded area on Monday and caused dramatic smoke plumes visible for miles is now under control, Bessemer Fire Chief Kendric Hughley said.

The fire was near Richards and Son, a salvage and tree cutting business on Oak Street near Minnesota Avenue.

“It’s where they push a lot of brush and wood,” Hughley said.

“That part did get involved in the fire. Whether it started there or not, we don’t know.”

The fire started before noon on Monday and was under control by about 5 p.m., he said.

“We don’t have anything on how it started,” Hughley said. “That’s still under investigation.”

The McAdory Fire Department provided a tanker truck and the Alabama Forestry Commission cut a fire break, Hughley said.

The fire did not endanger any residential neighborhoods and the smoke did not cause many problems, he said.

“It’s up on a hill, so we didn’t get a lot of complaints,” Hughley said.
