Bessemer teen killed in Lipscomb police chase crash; another juvenile critically injured

A Bessemer teen was killed when a car in which he was a passenger crashed follow a police pursuit.

Family and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the teen as Hajsun Jermale Hudson Jr. He was 18.

His grandmother, Edna Broaden, said her grandson attended Bessemer City High School where he was an “A Honor Roll” student.

“He loved school,’’ said Broaden, with whom Hudson lived.

The crash happened at 11:54 a.m. Friday on Sixth Avenue North at Fifth Street North in Lipscomb.

Authorities said Lipscomb police officers tried to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle for speeding and reckless driving, but the driver of the Dodge Challenger did not stop.

There was a short pursuit before officers called off the chase. A short time later, they came upon the wreck.

Authorities said the vehicle struck a tree and then overturned.

Hudon was taken to UAB Hospital where Broaden said he was removed from life support on Saturday. He was pronounced dead at 2:55 a.m.

A juvenile passenger remains in critical condition. A second juvenile is OK.

The driver, authorities said, is an adult. He was taken into custody but additional information about potential charges was not immediately available.

Repeated efforts to reach Lipscomb police and city officials since Friday have been unsuccessful.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the wreck.

Broaden said the family is devastated over Hudson’s death. She said he was out of school Friday for an e-learning day.

In addition to going to school, Hudson worked at Burger King in Five Points West.

“He was a very nice young man,’’ she said. “Everybody’s called me to tell me how respectful he was.”

Hudson was the oldest of three siblings.

“He was a good, kind-hearted person,’ Broaden said. “It hurts us very bad.”
