Bessemer police officer injured when struck by fleeing drug overdose suspect

A Bessemer police officer was injured early Saturday when he was struck by someone suspected of a drug overdose.

The officer was dispatched at 3:55 a.m. to the 3000 block of Ninth Avenue North to an investigate an overdose. The person was still behind the wheel of a car and responsive enough to drive off, said Lt. Christian Clemons.

In the process, the officer was struck. He sustained a broken foot.

The suspect was located at home in Hoover where he fled again, Clemons said. Bessemer and Hoover police took him into custody.

His name is being withheld pending formal charges.
