Bessemer man, 20, indicted federally for illegal possession of a machine gun

A Bessemer man has been indicted on a federal charge that illegally possessed a machine gun.

De’Andre Dewayne Moore, 20, was indicted in Birmingham this week, according to a joint announcement by Northern District of Alabama U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona and FBI Special Agent in Charge Carlton Peeples.

According to the indictment, in December 2022, Moore illegally possessed a Glock 9mm pistol equipped with a “Glock switch” – an after-market device designed to illegally convert a semiautomatic Glock pistol into a fully automatic machine gun.

Across the country, from California to Texas and in between, federal prosecutors are indicting more suspects for possession of the switches.

Authorities say the device is particularly concerning because a converted handgun has limited accuracy, which means the intended target may not get wounded, but others will.

Guns outfitted with a Glock switch can fire up to 1,100 rounds a minute.

According to testimony earlier this week against the suspects in a Sweet 16 birthday party shooting that led to four people dying and 32 others injured, one or two of the guns fired during the party were equipped with a “Glock switch.”

The maximum penalty for possession of a machine gun is 10 years in prison.

FBI investigated the case, along with the Bessemer Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael A. Royster is prosecuting the case.
