Belmont Stakes: Meet the contenders and watch them run
The colt that won the 2023 Kentucky Derby isn’t in the field for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes. But the colt that was supposed to win is.
After winning the Run for the Roses on May 6, Mage finished third in the Preakness Stakes on May 20 and won’t complete the Triple Crown trail when the Belmont Stakes is contested for the 155th time on Saturday.
But the nine-horse field for the Test of the Champion does include Forte, the morning-line favorite for the Kentucky Derby and the 2-year-old Eclipse Award winner of 2022. Forte was scratched on the morning of the Kentucky Derby because of a bruised foot, and the colt had to bypass the Preakness Stakes as well.
Preakness winner National Treasure did not run in the Kentucky Derby, but the colt is at the Belmont. Red Route One, the fourth-place finisher in the Preakness on May 20, also has come over from Pimlico.
Three Kentucky Derby runners return to the Triple Crown trail after skipping the Preakness – third-place finisher Angel of Empire, fifth-place finisher Hit Show and seventh-place finisher Tapit Trice.
At 1.5 miles, the Belmont Stakes will be the longest race that any of the entries has contested. The uniqueness of the race has horse handlers hoping to capitalize on the Tapit factor. Tapit has sired four Belmont Stakes winners and has two sons running on Saturday – Tapit Shoes and Tapit Trice. Tapit also is the damsire of Belmont Stakes entries Arcangelo, Il Miracolo and Red Route One.
At the post-position draw on Tuesday, Forte was established as the morning-line favorite at 5-2, followed by Tapit Trice at 3-1, Angel of Empire at 7-2 and National Treasure at 5-1.
Post time for the 155th Belmont Stakes is 6:02 p.m. CDT Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. FOX will televise the race.
The post positions and morning-line odds for Saturday’s race include:
1. Tapit Shoes 20-1
2. Tapit Trice 3-1
3. Arcangelo 8-1
4. National Treasure 5-1
5. Il Miracolo 30-1
6. Forte 5-2
7. Hit Show 10-1
8. Angel of Empire 7-2
9. Red Route One 15-1
