Basketball roundup: Westminster Christian whips Decatur

Top-ranked Class 4A Westminster Christian beat another higher classification foe, downing Class 6A Decatur 61-30 at home on Tuesday. The Wildcats have beaten five 6A teams and five 7A squads on the way to a 19-3 overall record this season.

Junior Chase McCarty poured in 26 points – with four 3-pointers and an 8-for-8 performance at the foul line – to lead Westminster Christian.

The Wildcats held Decatur to 32 percent shooting and forced 15 turnovers that translated into 14 points. Westminster made 55 percent of its shots, 6-of-10 on 3-pointers and made 11-of-12 from the free-throw line.

The winners started fast with a quick 11-0 run and never looked back, leading 19-8 after one period and 36-18 at the half. Westminster held Decatur scoreless in the third quarter – 0-for-7 from the field – outscoring the Red Raiders (10-11) by 16 points. Decatur outscored Westminster’s reserves 12-9 in the fourth quarter with a running clock.

Westminster senior Tyler Engle scored 8 points and senior Eric Robinson and junior TJ Carter added 6 apiece.

CLASS 7A

Sparkman 55, Hazel Green 32: Eighth-ranked Sparkman (18-6) picked up the win over the 6A Trojans on Tuesday as Jalyn Chambers scored 11 points with 7 rebounds.

Karmelo Montgomery scored 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Senators. Will Hawkins also scored 10 in the win and Chase Jackson had 6 assists.

Dothan 49, Enterprise 43 (OT): The Wolves improved to 18-3 overall and 5-1 in Area 3 play with the win at home on Tuesday.

Thomas Dowd pitched in 25 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for Dothan. Raymon Blackmon had 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assist to go with his 5 points. Mehkai Menefee added 8 points in the win.

Prattville 74, Lee-Montgomery 66: Kameron Shanks recorded his third consecutive double-double in the Lions’ Area 3 home win on Tuesday. Shanks, who was one of five Lions in double figures, scored 14 points and handed out 11 assists for Prattville and led the winners with 5 rebounds.

Lee led 13-11 after one quarter before Prattville pulled to a 33-25 halftime lead. The Generals cut the advantage to 6 headed into the final period, but the Lions closed out the win by outpointing the visitors 26-24 in the fourth.

Cam Richardson led Prattville with 19 points. Ty Bryant scored 12 points, Kamran Deramus had 11 and Ryan Booth added 10 for the Lions.

Prattville will host South Walton, Fla., on Saturday.

Daphne 42, Robertsdale 33: The Trojans came from behind after trailing 20-18 at the half to top 6A Robertsdale on the road. The Golden Bears led 16-9 after one quarter, but Daphne outscored Robertsdale 11-4 in the third period and 13-9 in the final quarter.

Randy Williams led Daphne with 11 points and Donovan Wilson added 10 in the win.

Katton Hobbs led Robertsdale (16-8) with 9 points.

Robertsdale travels to Spanish Fort on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Fairhope 60, Daphne 51: The sixth-ranked Pirates improved to 22-1 with the Area 2 win on Tuesday.

McCrae Taul registered a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Spence Sims added 13 points for Fairhope.

CLASS 6A

Mountain Brook 93, Pell City 58: The No. 2 Spartans picked up the road win on Tuesday with four players in double figures.

Ty Davis poured in 24 points and dealt 10 assists for Mountain Brook. Julius Clark scored 20 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Lawson Gardner scored 12 points and had 5 rebounds for the Spartans. John Colvin added 10 points for the winners.

Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 65, Central-Tuscaloosa 47: The ninth-ranked Patriots earned the home win with three players contributing double-figures efforts on Tuesday.

Shah Hall pitched in 20 points for the winners. DJ Hamlett scored 18 and Jakart Andrews added 11 for Hillcrest.

Javion Taylor scored 16 points for Central (13-10). King Larkin scored 12 for the Falcons and Dylan Prince added 10.

McGill-Toolen 75, Murphy 56: Devin McCaine scored 23 points to lead No. 3 McGill-Toolen to a win over visiting Murphy on Thursday night.

The Yellow Jackets (19-6) found themselves in an 18-11 first-quarter hole, but outscored the Panthers 15-7 in the second quarter to take a 1-point halftime lead. McGill-Toolen then scored 49 second-half points to salt away the win.

Bennett Russ added 13 points as 10 different Jackets scored in the win. McCaine dished out a team-high 5 assists and Tristen Brower grabbed 7 rebounds to go with his 4 points.

McGill-Toolen has won nine straight and will get back into Area 2 play on Tuesday when it travels to Baldwin County.

On Tuesday, McGill-Toolen rolled to a 71-36 Area 2 road win over Robertsdale. The Yellow Jackets led 10-5 after one quarter before pushing the advantage to 30-14 at halftime, thanks to two 3-pointers each from Alex Shamburger and Alex Heim and 6 points from Russ.

Jack Murphy scored 19 to lead the winners. Shamburger finished with 12 points and Russ had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Ethan Stokes scored all 8 of his points in the third quarter to go with his 4 blocked shots. Heim had 9 points and 5 assists.

Pelham 41, Carver-Birmingham 39: The Panthers earned the narrow win on the road on Thursday.

Dynarian Long led Pelham with 17 points, 9 coming on three 3-pointers in the first half as the Panthers led 22-20 at intermission. The two teams battled to a stalemate in the second half.

Joe Wimberly scored 11 points for Pelham.

On Tuesday, Pelham picked up a 45-32 Area 8 win over Briarwood. Wimberly led Pelham with 12 points. Thompson Gennari added 10 points in the win.

The Panthers travel to Jemison on Tuesday.

Blount 64, Saraland 46: The Leopards improved to 15-6 overall and 4-1 in Area 1 with the home win on Tuesday.

Antonio Jackson scored 22 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in the win. Joseph Paige scored 18 for Blount and Nick Dixon added 14.

Desmond Williams scored 20 for the Spartans.

CLASS 5A

Williamson 60, UMS-Wright 55: Williamson won its third straight game to even its record at 11-11.

Corien Hawthorne scored 18 points, pulled down 6 rebounds and had 4 assists. Mike Bonner had 14 points and 9 rebounds for the Lions.

Bridges Simmons scored 15 for the Bulldogs (14-10). Joe Lott followed with 13.

Williamson hosts Elberta on Friday, while UMS-Wright hosts Bayside.

Vigor 62, Faith Academy 55: Terrel Johnson scored 22 points and Jaden Addison had 18 points and 7 rebounds as the Wolves held off Faith Academy.

Vigor improved to 14-9 with the win.

L.J. Holifield led Faith with 18 points.

LeFlore 60, St. Paul’s 57: Arthur Williams and Kevin Moorer scored 17 points apiece as LeFlore held off St. Paul’s in an Area 2 contest on Tuesday. The game started with a pair of big runs as the Saints opened the game with a 15-2 lead before LeFlore went on a 16-3 spurt.

Brittney Reed scored 11 points for the Rattlers (14-5, 3-1).

Joe Brown led St. Paul’s (13-8, 4-1) with 20 points. Cade Horton scored 15 on five 3-pointers. Brown had a shot to tie the game with 1.6 seconds left, but the attempt wouldn’t fall.

CLASS 4A

Haleyville 73, Fairview 63: Drake James scored 21 points to lead No. 7 Haleyville to the home win on Tuesday.

Evan Cagle scored 16 points in the win. Bryant James and Rome Yarbrough scored 13 points apiece for the Lions (11-11). Whitt Sutherland scored 10.

Kobe Payne led Fairview with 21 points.

Haleyville plays at Class 3A No. 3 Midfield on Friday.

Dale County 79, Slocomb 59: The Warriors rolled to the Area 3 win at home on Tuesday. Dale County improved to 10-10 on the season and 1-2 in area play.

Nick McCarter, a 6-foot-4 senior, and 6-6 freshman Junio Smith recorded double-doubles in the win. McCarter scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Smith had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jyielle Britt scored 16 for the Warriors and Jamarvion Scott added 12.

Prattville Christian 55, Dallas County 51: Prattville Christian slipped past the Hornets in Plantersville on Thursday. PJ Evans and Cade Segars scored 15 points apiece for PCA (12-10, 3-0 in Area 5).

Evans had 9 rebounds and 5 assists in the win. Conner Williams scored 10 points and had 7 rebounds.

PCA beat Booker T. Washington Magnet 55-29 on Tuesday in an area game at Lee-Montgomery.

Carson Roberson led the winners with 16 points. He also had 6 rebounds. Segars scored 13 with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Williams scored 12 points with 4 rebounds and Evans added 9 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds.

The Panthers travel to Plantersville on Friday to meet Wilcox Central in another area game. Both teams are unbeaten in the area.

CLASS 3A

Montgomery Academy 61, Alabama Christian Academy 47: The Eagles earned the Area 6 win at home on Tuesday.

DJ Vinson led MA with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocked shots. Skyler Stovall scored 13 points with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Cole Caddell scored 11 points, all in the second half. Caddell also had 4 steals.

Montgomery Academy is 10-8 overall and 2-1 in the area. The Eagles host Trinity in another Area 6 game on Friday.

CLASS 2A

Whitesburg Christian 69, Lindsay Lane 52: The Warriors improved to 15-6, 3-2 in Area 14 with the home win on Tuesday.

Isaiah Matthews led all scorers with 24 points. William Pugh had 12 for Whitesburg Christian and Kaden Ragland added 9.

CLASS 1A

Georgiana 78, Pleasant Home 68: The sixth-ranked Panthers improved to 13-6 overall and 4-1 in Area 3 play with the win at home on Thursday.

Marques Payton had a double-double for the winners with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Nasir Cheatham led Georgiana with 15 points. Jacobie Morgan scored 14 points and had 7 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals. Jacob Lowery and Kaveon Miles had 11 points apiece. Jaden Stallworth added 10 points for Georgiana.

On Tuesday, the Panthers got an Area 3 win at home over McKenzie, 76-59. Five players scored in double figures, led by Morgan’s 17 points. Morgan also had 6 assists and 2 blocks.

Stallworth, Payton and Miles scored 14 points apiece for Georgiana. Stallworth also had 8 rebounds. Lowery scored 10 points and Cheatham claimed 15 rebounds.

Brantley 57, Kinston 52: Fourth-ranked Brantley earned the Area 2 home win on Thursday.

Keldric Brown registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jayden Parks led Brantley (13-2) with 22 points.

GIRLS

CLASS 6A

Hazel Green 55, Sparkman 29: The top-ranked Trojans won their 82nd straight game with victory on the road on Tuesday over second-ranked 7A Sparkman. Hazel Green is 23-0 on the season.

Zyriah Price led the winners with 17 points. Leah Brooks had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jaden Toney grabbed 9 rebounds to go with 8 points.

Kennedy Langham led Sparkman with 14 points. Jamya Griffin added 6.

McGill-Toolen 67, Robertsdale 14: In just her second game of the season, eighth-grader Reagan Burroughs made her presence felt with 15 points to lead the fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets on Tuesday.

Seniors Lindsey Cox and Emily Claire Harbaugh scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, in the Area 2 win. Senior Lucy Cox added 9 points for 21-5 and 4-0 McGill-Toolen.

The Yellow Jackets travel to Baldwin County for another area contest on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Lee-Huntsville 65, Mae Jemison 56: The Generals picked up the Area 16 win on Tuesday, pulling away from a 28-26 halftime lead to a 45-36 advantaged headed into the fourth quarter.

Limaya Batimba registered a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds for Lee. Jayla Turner and Rakiyah Taplin scored 14 points each in the win and London Harris scored 10 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 6 steals and 6 assists.

Jasmine Ervin led Mae Jemison with 22 points. Zee Berry scored 12 for the Jaguars and Kaila Richardson added 10.

CLASS 5A

Williamson 37, UMS-Wright 35: The Lions earned the narrow win over Class 4A No. 8 UMS-Wright at home on Tuesday. Taniya Smith scored 12 points for Williamson. ShaDonya Johnson scored 11 in the win.

Elizabeth Meador tossed in 17 points for the Bulldogs.

Charles Henderson 66, Carroll-Ozark 43: The Trojans knocked down 10 3-pointers on the way to the Area 4 win on Tuesday. Makala Hobdy poured in 30 points for Charles Henderson. Ta’keiya Brockton scored 16 points in the win.

Ameyah Gray scored 15 points and had 8 rebounds for Carroll (15-5, 3-1). Taliya Carter scored 10 points.

Carroll 43, G.W. Long 31: A pair of Eagles scored in double figures to lead Carroll over G.W. Long in a home game on Thursday. Taliyah Carter scored 18 points and grabbed 4 rebounds and Ameyah Gray had 15 points with 5 rebounds.

Aaliyah McCray led Carroll (16-5) with 7 rebounds.

Ally Whitehead led G.W. Long with 12 points.

Carroll hosts Rehobeth on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Holtville 56, Isabella 51: Senior Julie Nekolna, who averages 22.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, poured in 28 points and claimed 22 rebounds in the road win on Tuesday. Nekolna also had 7 blocks, 5 assists and 3 steals.

Ana Brown scored 9 points for the Bulldogs. Holly Smith, who grabbed 12 rebounds, and Ragen Roberts had 8 points each in the win.

CLASS 4A

Priceville 65, Danville 27: The Bulldogs raced to a 28-8 first-quarter lead and went up 47-17 at the half on the way to the road win in the second round of the Morgan County Tournament on Thursday.

All nine Priceville players made it into the scoring column in the rout. Lauren Hames led the way with 15 points and 6 rebounds. She also had 5 steals.

Leslie Hames scored 12 points for the Bulldogs (13-6). Ashlyn Johnson had 5 assists to go with 7 points and Carly Nelson had 5 rebounds with 7 points.

Prattville Christian 83, Dallas County 5: The third-ranked Panthers improved to 20-2 and 3-0 in Area 5 play with the runaway win on Thursday.

Avery Rogers knocked down eight 3-pointers to lead Prattville Christian with 24 points. She also had 8 assists and 5 steals. Hannah Jones scored 22 points and Kayden Carr just missed a triple-double with 16 points, 11 assists and 9 steals. Jenna McClendon had 9 rebounds to go with her 6 points.

On Tuesday, Prattville Christian whipped Booker T. Washington Magnet 57-5 at Lee-Montgomery.

Jones scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double for PCA. CoCo Thomas scored 10 points and had 5 rebounds. Rogers scored 8 points and had 5 steals for Prattville Christian.

PCA will travel to Wilcox Central in Camden on Friday to meet the Jaguars, who are also unbeaten in Area 5.

Orange Beach 50, Baldwin County 48: Mary Rebecca Murphy, an eighth-grader playing up with the varsity, knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lead the Makos past 6A Baldwin County at home on Tuesday.

Juniors Bryce Collins and Falyn Beebe led Orange Beach with 11 points each. Murphy added 10 points in the win.

CLASS 3A

Danville 37, Brewer 30: The Hawks blanked visiting Brewer 13-0 in the third quarter to rally from a 20-18 halftime deficit and earn the win on Tuesday. The 5A Patriots led 11-10 after one quarter and outscored the home team 10-6 in the fourth.

Adily Alberti led Danville with 11 points and 4 steals. Alyssa Brooks added 7 points and claimed 6 rebounds in the win.

Madisyn Freeman and Jacey Atkinson scored 7 points each for Brewer.

Trinity 59, St. James 28: The top-ranked Wildcats picked up the Area 6 road win over No. 5 St. James on Tuesday with four players scoring in double figures.

Francie Morris led Trinity with 20 points. She also grabbed 7 rebounds and had 3 assists. Emma Kate Smith scored 17 points with 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Mya Moskowitz had her second straight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Maddie Smith scored 10 points with 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Cottage Hill 54, Flomaton 24: The Warriors earned the Area 1 win at Flomaton on Tuesday night.

Dakota Freeman led Cottage Hill with 16 points. Ashlyn Newton scored 11 in the win with Taylor Davidson and Sydney Roossinck scored 8 points each.

Cottage Hill improved to 7-7 on the year and 1-1 in area play.

CLASS 1A

Georgiana 72, McKenzie 38: Lillie Boggan notched a triple-double as the Panthers picked up their first Area 3 win at home over McKenzie. Boggan scored 25 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and made 11 seals as Georgiana improved to 4-11 overall and 1-3 in area play.

Sakenya Mobley scored 10 for the winners and claimed 9 rebounds.

Brantley 39, Kinston 27: The Bulldogs improved to 5-3 on the year with the Area 2 win on Thursday.

CoCo Stamps led the winners with 15 points and 8 steals. Myia Mount pulled down 24 rebounds for Brantley to go with her 8 points.

AISA

Lakeside School 50, Chambers Academy 42: Chloe Helms poured in 28 points for the seventh-ranked Chiefs in the win over Chambers. Eliza Eriksen had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophie Seaborn had 5 rebounds and 5 steals for Lakeside (8-9, 2-0 in area play).
