Basketball roundup: Westminster Christian tops Oxford

Third-ranked Class 4A Westminster Christian came out on top in a game of streaks, beating Oxford 56-47 in the consolation bracket of the 40th Huntsville City Classic at Huntsville High School on Thursday. The Wildcats ran their season record to 13-3.

Class 6A Oxford jumped to a quick 9-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game before Westminster went on a 34-11 run to close out the half with a 34-21 lead. Oxford (6-11) outscored the Wildcats 17-8 in the third quarter to draw within 42-40 headed into the fourth period.

The Yellow Jackets got within 48-47 on a put-back by Jordan Kelley before Westminster went on an 8-0 run, getting buckets from Collier Lawson, Tyler Engle and a pair of runners in the lane by Eric Robinson to close out the win.

Robinson led Westminster with 12 points. Jackson Hammond scored 11 and Engle finished with 10.

The Wildcats shot 57 percent from the field, hitting 22-of-28 shots while holding Oxford to 39 percent (18-of-46). The Yellow Jackets did hit 7-of-19 shots from behind the 3-point arc.

Jaylen Alexander and TJ Allen scored 14 points apiece to lead Oxford. Allen and Jayden Lewis led the team with 6 rebounds each. Alexander had 5 rebounds with 3 assists.

The championship game between defending champion Sparkman and Baker is set for 7 p.m.

HUNTSVILLE CITY CLASSIC at Huntsville High

Madison Academy 63, Hazel Green 59: The Mustangs outscored Hazel Green 16-8 in the third period to pull away from a 29-all tie at halftime and held on for the consolation bracket win. The Trojans outscored Madison Academy 22-18 in the final quarter, but fell short of taking the win.

Michael Stanford led the winners with 28 points and 7 rebounds. Stanford made 5-of-8 3-point attempts and was 9-for-15 on the day. Jaylen Blackwell scored 12 points and had 6 rebounds.

Sayiid Allen led Hazel Green with 17 points with 6 rebounds. TJ Pruitt scored 12 and Jalen Bright added 11.

Austin 61, Haleyville 59: The Black Bears trailed 25-20 at the half after a 3-point second period, but outscored No. 9 Class 4A Haleyville 22-14 in the third quarter of the consolation bracket game and held on for the win. The Lions cut the lead to the final margin with a bucket with 26 seconds left.

Cam Collins came off the bench to record a double-double for Austin, scoring 18 points and claiming 10 rebounds. Collins also had 4 steals. Jordan Johnson scored 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for the 7A Black Bears (9-9).

James Drake led Haleyville (7-8) with 19 points and 7 assists. Bryant James pitched in 16 points, with four 3-pointers. Whitt Sutherland scored 13 in the loss.

Lee-Huntsville 70, Columbia 66: The Generals shot 52 percent from the field – 46 percent on 13 3-point attempts – to top Columbia. Lee led 30-29 at the half and 52-49 headed into the final quarter.

Columbia’s KeShawn Watkins poured in 36 points and grabbed 23 rebounds – 16 off the offensive glass – in the loss. Kameron Folwer added 16 for the Eagles.

Devious Woods led Lee with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Malachi Nichols and Myles Jones scored 12 points each and Namon Hobson added 10 for the Generals.

GIRLS

FALCON-WILDCAT CLASSIC at St. John Paul II Catholic

Madison Academy 47, Boaz 34: The Mustangs ran their winning streak to seven games to improve to 14-4 on the season.

Brooklyn Tucker led the winners with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Jordyn Blackwell added 9 points. Emily Mouser had 8 assists for fifth-ranked Class 5A Madison Academy.

KEITH DAVIS MEMORIAL at Rogersville

Priceville 60, Mars Hill Bible 44: The Bulldogs knocked off Class 2A No. 3 Mars Hill Bible after leading 24-18 at the half and 47-31 headed into the final quarter.

Leslie Hames poured in 25 points for Priceville (10-5). Abby Langlois registered a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. She also had 5 blocked shots. Gracin Prater scored 9 points and had 7 assists.

Belle Hill led Mars Hill with 12 points. Kadence Rolston added 10.

Priceville will travel to Brewer for a 4 p.m. game on Tuesday.
