Basketball roundup: UMS-Wright girls advance to regionals

Noel Freeman had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Amelia Meador and Elizabeth Meador had 8 and 7 points, respectively, as UMS-Wright hit foul shots late in the game to secure a 43-37 win over T.R. Miller in Class 4A subregional action at Mitchell Gymnasium on Monday night.

Freeman, who had missed several games due to injury, was a welcome presence for the Bulldogs (26-5), who head to the South Regionals, which begin on Wednesday.

“Noel was tremendous for us tonight,” said UMS-Wright head coach Terry Canova. “She’s a big-time player. There was a stretch of seven games when we played without her. In hindsight, it may have been a blessing because we were still able to win games. Now that’s she’s back, it makes us even better players.”

Ty’Keria Wright had 16 points, including four 3-pointers, for T. R Miller. The Tigers’ season ends at 18-4.

UMS-Wright led 16-7 at the end of the first period, but the Tigers came back and outscored the Bulldogs 17-6 to take a 24-22 halftime edge. T.R. Miller remained in the lead until the Freeman nailed the second of two free throws and got a basket to put UMS-Wright back in the lead for good.

The Tigers battled back in the fourth period and pulled to within 39-36, but they were forced to foul. Amelia Meador and Freeman each nailed a pair of free throws in the waning seconds.

“We don’t shoot too many (free throws), but we sure made some when we needed them,” said Canova. “In every game, basketball is a game of runs, and for the most important thing was stopping those runs and not letting the game get out of hand. It was just a tremendous team effort (defensively).”

“We’re still relatively young. I’m proud of the way we fought and competed though,” Hartselle coach Amber Deline said. “Give credit to (Mortimer Jordan). They’re a good team, been solid all year. Their pressure hurt us. We didn’t do a good job handling the ball, and offensive rebounds as well.”
