Basketball Roundup: Mountain Brook, Pelham, Brantley boys advance

Mountain Brook outscored visiting Gadsden City 27-1 in the first quarter Tuesday night and rolled to a 69-47 victory in their Class 6A subregional basketball game.

The Spartans advanced to the Northeast Regional semifinals at Jacksonville State where they will play Parker.

After the lopsided first quarter, Gadsden City cut down its turnovers and unforced errors and played to a near stalemate, actually outscoring the Spartans 15-8 in the final quarter, but it was way too late.

Senior guard Kyle Layton led the Spartans during that explosive first quarter with 11 points. He knocked down three 3-pointers in the first eight minutes. Still working his way back from a torn ACL, Layton led all scorers with a game-high 15 points and finished with four 3-pointers.

“My teammates found me in open spots, and I had to knock them down,” he said. “The win feels good. We still got a job to do. So on to the next one.”

Freshmen Jakobi Sharp led the Titans with 12 points, and seniors Khalil Hughley and Steven Jones chipped in nine points and eight points, respectively.

“Against Vestavia Hills (on Feb. 3), we didn’t make our free throws and didn’t rebound well. I thought our guys have responded well in area tournament play and again tonight,” Mountain Brook head coach Tyler Davis said.

Davis praised his team’s depth.

“I think it’s a good thing from the standpoint, if we are going to play a game in the next 48 hours, we got 15 guys who can roll,” he said. “It gave some guys who don’t play a lot of minutes an opportunity to get in there and play more than they normally do.”

Junior Carson Romero scored 11 points tonight, and Junior Ty Davis scored 10.

CLASS 5A

Vigor 61, B.C. Rain 59

Jaden Addison scored 15 points and Terrel Johnson added 12 as Vigor moved into the South Regional semifinals.

“The seniors showed great leadership tonight in a heavyweight boxing match against B.C. Rain,” Wolves’ coach Jairus Jackson said. “We struggled from the free throw line and got in foul trouble, which effected our game tremendously.

“B.C. Rain did a very good job and played extremely hard. However, we were able to hold on and rely on seniors Jaden Addison, Tylar Dixon and Darrius Apkins. They all made very huge plays down the stretch to give us the victory.”

Vigor will play either Charles Henderson or Headland at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery.
