Basketball roundup: McGill-Toolen slips past rival Murphy
Junior Ethan Stokes finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Class 6A No. 6-ranked McGill-Toolen over rival Murphy 39-36 on the road Thursday night.
Junior Grayson Brower blocked a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds as the Jackets, who had a double-digit lead twice in the second half, pushed their win streak to 6.
Points were hard to come by for both teams, but Stokes scored 11 in the second half for the Jackets, who avenged a 60-47 loss earlier in the season.
McGill-Toolen, which led just 15-12 at halftime, opened the second half with a 6-0 run to take a 21-12 lead, sparked by Andrew Murchison’s two baskets. The Jackets took a 31-24 edge into the final quarter where Stokes scored 6 of the team’s final 8 points.
McGill (17-5, 3-0) returns to Class 6A, Area 2 action Friday when it hosts Robertsdale.
Murphy got 30 of its 36 points from two players. Cordairus Dixon scored 16, while Deangelon Johnson added 14 for the Panthers.

Baker 69, Davidson 49
Baker ran its season record to 18-7 and improved to 4-0 in Class 4A, Area 1 with a win over Davidson at home on Wednesday.
The Hornets led 13-10 after one quarter, 37-25 at the half and 59-39 headed into the final period.
Deshawn Thomas scored 17 points to lead the winners. Desmond Williams scored 16 for Baker.
Derrick Butler led Davidson with 21 points. Ja’lyjawon Edwards added 10.
Baker plays at Theodore at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
Cottage Hill 70, Flomaton 49
Shadrick Toodle led the way with 23 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals for Class 3A No. 3 Cottage Hill (16-7).
Clay Scofield added 18 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds and a block, while Caleb Metzner had 18 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Earlier in the week, the Warriors defeated Davidson 65-43. Kaden Washam, Kaden Nguyen and Toodle all scored in double figures on MLK Day.
Washam had 14 points and 3 rebounds, Nguyen contributed 13 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals and Toodle had 11 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal.
The Warriors host Mobile Christian tonight.
Williamson 58, Blount 31
Mikel Bonner had 19 points, 17 rebounds and 5 blocked shots as Williamson improved to 18-6 overall. The Lions are 3-0 in 5A, Area 1 play.
Silas Evans followed with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Corien Coleman scored 10.
In a 49-40 win over B.C. Rain earlier this week, Evans had 19 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks. Coleman added 11.
Jackson 75, Citronelle 53
Class 4A No. 4 Jackson placed four players in double figures in improving to 18-2 overall.
William Joseph Taylor led the way with 18 points followed by Keeyun Chapman with 15, Micah Caster with 13 and Landon Duckworth with 10.
The Aggies play at No. 5 Escambia County on Friday.
Vigor 80, St. Luke’s 53
Terrell Johnson and Jordan Clark each scored 13 for Vigor (19-5) in the MLK Classic at Bishop State.
Albert Holcombe followed with 10 points. The Wolves have now won 11 straight.
Baker 67, LeFlore 46
Derrick Florence scored 15 points and Lovalle Nelson had 12 as the Hornets improved to 17-7 with a win in the MLK Classic at Bishop State.
Freshman Bralyn Taylore scored 11 for David Armstrong’s team.
Cam Patterson and Ethan Foster each scored 12 for LeFlore.
Mary G. Montgomery 59, Spanish Fort 50
Zion Hunter scored 24 points as the seventh-ranked Class 7A Vikings improved to 19-3.
Jaylen Gray added 12 and DJ Broughton had 10.
MGM will play Alma Bryant on Friday.
BIRMINGHAM
Mountain Brook 72, Pell City 47
The third-ranked Class 6A Spartans had four players score in double figures to earn the Area 10 road win on Wednesday.
Ty Davis led Mountain Brook with 21 points and 6 assists. Carson Romero scored 20 points – with six 3-point buckets – and had 4 steals. John Carwie and Jack Bakken scored 10 points apiece. Carwie also had 5 steals and Bakken had 5 rebounds.
Gardendale 71, American Christian 61
The Rockets improved to 12-6 on the season with the home win on Monday.
Cody Vance led Gardendale with 19 points. David Rodgers scored 13 and Tyler Grayson added 10 in the win.
Midfield 85, Tarrant 59
Class 3A fifth-ranked Midfield (14-8) got double-digit scoring from four players on Thursday to earn the Area 9 win over Tarrant.
Aaron Adams had 21 points and 7 rebounds while Armonie Franklin added 18 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals, Jashawn Moore had 15 points and 6 rebounds and Donven Wilson had 12 points, 7 steals, 5 assists and 4 rebounds.
Tarrant (12-7) was paced by Jamaurea Berry with 16 points while Kalvin Walker scored 15 and Andre Raines had 10 points.
McAdory 86, Brookwood 29
Tristan Gilmore paced McAdory (14-8, 2-0) with 27 points in the Thursday win and added 13 in an earlier 86-34 win over Bessemer City.
Jacorey Whitted grabbed his 500th career rebound against Bessemer.
Bessemer Academy 63, Clarke Prep 26
Johnathan Winston led a balanced attack with 13 points while Luke Turner had 11 and Garrison Manley had 10 points for the AISA top-ranked Rebels (16-1) on Thursday.
Bessemer Academy also beat Monroe Academy 79-25 in a region game last week.
Tyseon Smith had 16 points, Winston scored 13 and Jacob Brister had 11 points.
STATEWIDE
Montgomery Academy 64, Alabama Christian 46
Class 3A No. 10 Montgomery Academy rallied past Alabama Christian on the road on Tuesday. Alabama Christian led 15-7 after one quarter before the visitors jumped to a 35-29 halftime edge. The winners carried an 8-point lead into the final period and held ACA to 3 points in the fourth.
Seth Edwards scored 23 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 4 steals for Montgomery Academy. Skyler Stovall scored 16 points with 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Brewer Welch scored 12 with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. DJ Vinson grabbed 12 rebounds to go with 8 points.
Montgomery Academy is 16-6 overall and 3-0 in Area 6 play. MA will host Trinity for the annual Coaches vs. Cancer game on Friday.
Chambers Academy 42, Lakeside 30
Lakeside got a double-double from Rhodes Bennett in the loss on Wednesday. Bennett scored 14 points and claimed 10 rebounds. He also blocked 8 shots.
Darren Macieic had 4 assists and a pair of steals for the Chiefs. Kaleb Moore grabbed 5 rebounds.
Abbeville Christian 76, Lakeside 60
Rhodes Bennett poured in 36 points, but it wasn’t enough as Lakeside fell on Tuesday to Abbeville Christian. Bennett also had 9 rebounds, 4 blocked shots and 3 steals.
Darren Madine scored 12 points with 5 rebounds and 5assists for Lakeside. JJ Hill had 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
Valiant Cross Academy 74, Evangel Christian 72
Seventh-ranked Valiant Cross edged No. 10 Evangel Christian on Monday.
Deshawn Hall led the winners with 22 points, 14 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. Letwan Hall Jr. added 14 points and 9 rebounds. John Cosby scored 14 points and had 4 steals.
Evangel responded with a 57-33 win over Coosa Valley on Thursday. Jordan Duncan, Tylon Shine and Will McCord each scored 10 for Evangel (10-7), which will host Edgewood tonight.
Patrician 61, Jackson Academy 26
Matt Aldridge had 18 points and 3 steals in Patrician’s win.
Matthew Mize chipped in 18 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals, while Dalton Bracknell had 9 points and 4 steals.
Patrician improved to 14-1 with the win.
Georgiana 68, Red Level 62
Kaveon Miles scored 21 points as Class 1A No. 2 Georgiana improved to 16-2 overall.
Nasir Chetham, Noah Nelson and Jaden Stallworth each scored 12 points and Stallworth added 11 rebounds.
Jacobie Morgan had 11 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists.

BIRMINGHAM
Hoover 68, Prattville Christian 38
The fifth-ranked Class 7A Bucs rolled past 4A No. 1 Prattville Christian on Monday in the BallN Prep MLK Jr. Classic at Hoover. Hoover used a big second quarter to pull away from a 15-12 first-quarter lead, outscoring the Panthers 15-5 for a 30-17 halftime advantage. The Bucs led 49-29 headed into the final quarter.
Khloe Ford led Hoover with 21 points. Layla Cannon scored 15 in the win and Ariana Peagler added 11 for the Bucs (17-6).
Avery Rogers scored 10 points for PCA (17-5). Kayden Carr scored 7 points with 5 rebounds. Leah Cate Wilson hauled down 13 rebounds.
John Carroll 49, Leeds 33
The Cavaliers improved to 13-9 on the season with Monday’s road win.
Meredith Davis led 10 John Carroll scorers with 7 points. Riley Elkins had 6 steals in the win.
Gardendale 53, American Christian 30
Layla Berry poured in 27 points as the Rockets rolled past American Christian at home on Monday.
McKenzie McAnnally scored 11 for Gardendale (12-8).
Chelsea 56, Oak Mountain 19
The Class 7A No. 8 Hornets rolled to the big Area 6 win on the road on Thursday. Chelsea improved to 21-3 on the year.
Haley Trotter led Chelsea with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Sadie Schwallie had 12 points in the win.
Mortimer Jordan 65, Pinson Valley 40
Keyarra Scottland scored 10 points to surpass 1,000 career points for Class 6A third-ranked Mortimer Jordan (19-2) on Thursday.
Scottland added 7 rebounds and 5 assists while eighth-grade sister Kaylani scored 12 points, Corrin Burnett had 11 points and 6 rebounds and Mattie Machen scored 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.
MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA
Pine Forest (Fla.) 54, Gulf Shores 42
Fourth-ranked Class 5A Gulf Shores fell behind early and lost to Pine Forest of Pensacola, Fla., in the 8th annual Dreamkeepers Showcase at West Florida High School in Pensacola on Monday.
The Eagles pulled ahead 15-7 after one quarter and led 26-20 at the half. Pine Forest outscored the Dolphins 14-9 in the third period and 14-13 in the final quarter. Gulf Shores trimmed the lead to 48-42 late in the fourth, but couldn’t get any closer.
Senior Alyssa Thompson scored 19 to lead the Dolphins (20-6). Keyona Royal had 11 rebounds and 4 assists to go with 9 points. Point guard Maya Griffin returned to the court after missing two games with an injury and added 7 points, 4 assists and 4 steals.
Aniya Jackson led Pine Forest with 23 points.
The Dolphins, 3-0 in Area 1, return to area play on Friday at B.C. Rain.
Daphne 55, Fairhope 36
La’Merrica Johnson had 27 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals as No. 7 Daphne defeated Fairhope in a Class 7A, Area 2 battle Wednesday night.
Abby Johnson contributed 7 points, 6 steals and 5 assists.
The Trojans (17-3, 2-0) play at Foley on Friday.
Davidson 59, Foley 50
Jenice Adjessom scored 29 points as No. 6 Davidson defeated No. 10 Foley in a battle of ranked Class 7A teams.
Morgan Barnett added 15 points.
The Warriors improved to 19-5 with the win.
Jackson 72, Citronelle 22
Jasmine Jones had 12 points and 3 assists for the fourth-ranked Class 4A Aggies (21-2). Tyra Caves had 11 points and 4 assists.
Jackson will play at Escambia County on Friday.
Blount 55, Williamson 15
The Leopards rolled to the road win on Thursday.
Donnie Torrey led Blount with 18 points. Heaven Watlington added 14 in the win.
Seventh-grader Paydon Davis led Williamson with 11 points.
Washington County 71, Clarke County 62
Shaquondra Holcombe poured in 29 points to lead the Bulldogs to the home win on Thursday.
Tymiah Burroughs scored 27 for Washington County. Mia White added 9 in the win.
Jayla Horn led Clarke County with 24 points. Aleah Watkins scored 14 and Shadricka Pritchett added 11.
STATEWIDE
Montgomery Academy 40, Alabama Christian 13
The Eagles rolled to the Class 3A, Area 6 win at Alabama Christian.
Kaci Armistead led MA with 13 points. Sophia Cho scored 12 and Olivia Smith added 10 for Montgomery Academy.
The Eagles will host Trinity in another area game on Friday.
St. James 60, Trinity 57
Class 3A No. 4 St. James ran its record to 19-4 overall with the win over No. 5 Trinity at home on Tuesday.
The Trojans led 36-18 in the first half before holding off Trinity’s 21-point fourth quarter charge for the win.
Kaitlin Mitchell led St. James with 19 points. Ava Card tossed in 18 and Morgan Lilly had 16 in the Area 6 win.
Carroll 56, Rehobeth 41
The Eagles ran their record to 14-6 with the win on Thursday at Rehobeth.
Taliyah Carter led Carroll with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Zymirria Glanton also scored 20 points and had 5 rebounds. Frankasia Glover grabbed 12 rebounds in the win.
Carroll travels to Cottonwood on Monday for a 4:30 p.m. game.
On Tuesday, Carroll picked up a 35-32 win over Charles Henderson in a Class 5A, Area 4 play at home. The Eagles are 3-1 in area play.
Glanton led Carroll with 15 points. She added 3 steals in the win. Carter scored 11 points with 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Lauriel Lynn grabbed 11 rebounds for the Eagles.
Chambers Academy 36, Lakeside 33
Lakeside fell to 9-11 on the season with the loss on Wednesday.
Chloe Helms led Lakeside with 19 points. She also grabbed 6 rebounds. Addysen Eriksen had 8 rebounds and Addy Helms scored 8 points with 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Lakeside 51, Abbeville Christian 31
Chloe Helms tossed in 23 points with 4 assists and 3 steals as the Chiefs topped Abbeville Christian on Tuesday.
Dillon White scored 9 points and had 6 rebounds with 3 assists. Addysen Eriksen grabbed 5 rebounds and blocked 4 shots. Addy Helms also had 5 rebounds.
Red Level 56, Georgiana 46
Lillie Boggan had 19 points and 6 assists for Georgiana. Nyeshia Thomas had 15 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks.
