Basketball roundup: Huntsville boys rip Lee to open season
The Crimson Panthers opened the 2023-24 season by knocking off city rival Lee-Huntsville 63-45 at home on Tuesday. Huntsville led 28-12 at the half and pushed the margin to 55-26 after three quarters.
The Panthers held Lee to 28 percent shooting from the field. Huntsville outrebounded the Generals 44-34.
Caleb Harrison, a 6-foot-10 senior and Mr. Basketball candidate, recorded a triple-double for Huntsville with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. Harrison has signed with Samford University.
Brayden Rivers scored 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for the Panthers. Simon Walker tossed in 8 points and dished out 5 assists in the win.
Lee (0-1) was led by Keyshawn Watkins’ 20 points.

BOYS
Baker 100, Murphy 91 (OT)
Derrick Florence, a 6-foot-5 junior, led the Hornets with 33 points as Baker improved to 2-0 on the season with the overtime win at home on Thursday.
Desmond Williams pitched in 22 points for Baker and Dashawn Thomas added 17.
DJ Johnson led Murphy with 24 points. Cordarius Dixon scored 17 and Bryan Jackson and Kinley Simmons scored 14 points apiece.
The Hornets play Biloxi on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at St. Martin in Ocean Springs, Miss.
James Clemens 43, Sparkman 42
Seito Yakota and Duncan Robertson scored 12 points apiece to help the Jets past Sparkman on Tuesday. Isiah Cleaves added 10 points.
Makhi Hammond led Sparkman with 12 points.
Baldwin County 57, UMS-Wright 51
The Tigers led throughout on the way to the season-opening win at home. Baldwin County was up 19-10 after one quarter, 25-21 at the half and 40-38 headed into the fourth period.
Sims Druhan led UMS-Wright with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Matthew McPhillips had 9 points and 9 rebounds.
Bayshore 36, Satsuma 29
The Eagles topped Elberta on Thursday to improve to 2-1 on the year. Senior Collin Hester scored 14 points and Bobby Bynum added 12 points on four 3-pointers.
On Tuesday, senior Carter Frego led all scorers with 22 points to help Bayshore past Satsuma 58-25. Hester scored 12 and junior Carter Macias had 8.
Bayshore plays at Orange Beach on Tuesday.
Baker 83, Spanish Fort 53
The Hornets won their season opener in a home game on Tuesday. Baker rallied from an 18-15 first-quarter deficit to lead 36-25 at the half. The home team was up 63-38 after three periods.
Dashawn Thomas scored 20 points to lead Baker in scoring. Ryan Majors scored 17, Derrick Florence had 14 and Da’Shawn Beverly added 12. All nine Hornets scored in the win.
Bryce Walker, Jacob Black and Lucca Nelson led Spanish Fort with 10 points each.
Auburn 87, Prattville 56
The Tigers raced to a 27-11 first-quarter lead and carried a 54-25 advantage into halftime.
Junior Ty Bryant led Prattville with 31 points. Sophomore Donavan Brown had 5 rebounds to go with 8 points in the loss.
Grissom 65, Bob Jones 38
Junior guard Melvyn Webb scored 22 points and grabbed 4 rebounds as the Tigers beat Bob Jones on Tuesday.
Justin McCall scored 12 points, had 5 rebounds and 6 assists for Grissom. Javon Alexander added 12 points with 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals.
Hoover 84, Central-Tuscaloosa 34
Dwayne Brown led the Bucs with 20 points in the home rout to open the season on Thursday. Salim London pitched in 16 points for Hoover.
Jarrett Fairley scored 10 points with 7 assists and 4 rebounds in the win. Jackson Sheffield had 6 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Javion Taylor scored 10 points for the Falcons.
GIRLS
Homewood 45, Ramsay 32
Sophomore Ellis McCool led the Patriots with 14 points and 8 rebounds in a Thursday night win over Ramsay.
Senior Kayla Warren added 13 points and had 3 steals.
On Tuesday, Homewood whipped Pinson Valley 57-39. Lane Crowe led the winners with 13 points. Ava Robinson scored 12 points and Warren tossed in 11. Myra McCool had 10 points.
On Monday, the Patriots topped Cornerstone Christian 65-26. Ellis McCool scored 17 points to lead Homewood. Kayla Warren had 13.
Bob Jones 46, Sparkman 34
The Patriots jumped to an 18-5 first-quarter lead and never looked back to win the Thursday game, handing Sparkman its first loss of the season.
Janiyah Bone led the winners with 14 points.
Abethany James had 12 points to lead Sparkman (2-1).
Sparkman 62, James Clemens 45
Sparkman improved to 2-0 with the win. Nicholls State commitment Jamya Griffin led all scorers with 18 points. She also claimed 10 rebounds.
Abethany James added 13 points for the Senators.
James Clemens was led by Deyon Smith’s 15 points. Kimory Porter added 11.
McGill-Toolen 44, Vigor 37
The Yellow Jackets opened their season with the win in the McGill-Toolen Tip-off Class on Wednesday.
Freshman Reagan Burroughs scored a career-best 26 points, hitting 12-of-15 shots in the win.
McGill also beat Saraland 40-30, led by junior Albanie Dixon’s 11 points.
UMS-Wright 67, Foley 57
On Monday, the Class 4A Bulldogs improved to 2-0 with a home win in a battle of final four teams from last season. Foley made the final four in Class 7A in 2022-23.
Noel Freeman led the winners for the second straight game with 18 points. She also hauled in 10 rebounds. Senior Amelia Meador pitched in 16 points, hitting 5-of-6 3-point attempts. Junior Ansleigh Ishee scored 12.
Keiyonta Knight led Foley with 24 points and Ashauntee Hobbs scored 22. They combined for nine 3-pointers.
Fairhope 49, Vigor 46
The Pirates opened the season with the win at home on Tuesday. Ella Byrd led Fairhope with 19 points. She also had 6 rebounds.
Cooper Anderson scored 11 points and Peyton Frazer scored 7 with 6 rebounds.
Gardendale 46, Spain Park 44
The Rockets edged Spain Park to open the season at home on Tuesday. Layla Berry led all scorers with 20 points. Taylor Henry scored 10 for Gardendale and Chloe Sanders had 7.
Nylan Calhoun led Spain Park with 11 points. Jordyn Corey added 7.
