Basketball roundup: Huntsville beats Buckhorn, Mountain Brook

Huntsville completed its sweep of the 2022 Class 6A championship finals participants with a Thursday night 49-45 win at Mountain Brook, last season’s runner-up. On Tuesday, the Crimson Panthers erased a 13-point halftime deficit to beat 2022 champion Buckhorn 58-54 at home.

Class 7A Huntsville is 10-1 on the year with the lone loss coming on the road at nationally No. 1-ranked Montverde Academy.

The Panthers led Mountain Brook by as many as 14 points in the third quarter before the Spartans (7-2) cut the margin to 3 with just under a minute to play. Caleb Harrison made a pair of free throws for the final margin.

Huntsville coach Christian Schweers was an assistant under former Mountain Brook coach Bucky McMillan for seven seasons, during which the Spartans won four state titles. Schweers is in his sixth season leading the Panthers.

Brayden Rivers led all scorers in the Mountain Brook win with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Harrison added 15 points and 10 rebounds for Huntsville.

Mountain Brook senior Ty Davis, a Creighton signee, was held in check scoring just 8 points. Jack Bakken scored 10 to lead the Spartans followed by John Carwie’s 9.

Huntsville hit 49 percent of its shots from the floor and made 12-of-18 free throws and out-rebounded Mountain Brook 25-18. The Spartans forced 17 turnovers while committing just 7. Mountain Brook made 31 percent of its shots from the floor and was 8-for-22 from the line.

On Monday, in front of almost 2,000 fans at Huntsville, Simon Walker caught fire in the second half with six 3-pointers on his way to 20 points – all after intermission.

Buckhorn led 13-8 after one quarter and lead 32-19 at the half. Huntsville rallied to trail 40-39 headed into the final period. A Walker 3-pointer gave the home team its first lead of the game at 46-45 with just over 4 minutes to play.

Harrison scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds for Huntsville, now riding a 25-game home winning streak. John David Gossett scored 10 points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Sophomore Caleb Holt tossed in 20 points to lead Buckhorn (6-2). Jeremiah Wilson and Fred Derrick added 13 points apiece.

Cullman 56, Florence 44

Evan Wilson scored 15 points to lead Cullman to the win on the road on Tuesday.

Jamarrion Reeder scored 11 points to lead Florence (3-3). Kedrick Triplett added 10 for the Bearcats.

Florence travels to Deshler on Friday.

Hazel Green 73, Sparkman 62

The Trojans used a balanced attack to top Sparkman on the road on Tuesday. Terrance Pruitt scored 21 points for Hazel Green. Jalen Bright pitched in 18 points and Legend Martin had 16.

Eli Bannister led the Senators (3-6) with 18 points. Tecoy Wilder scored 14 and eighth-grader Tylan Pace had 11. Jamarion Matthews scored 10 points and had 5 rebounds.

Muscle Shoals 61, Hartselle 51

The Trojans earned the home win on Tuesday, outscoring Hartselle 11-6 in the second period to lead 24-21 at the half. Muscle Shoals led 40-31 after three quarters and held off the Tigers in the fourth period.

Luke Mosley led Muscle Shoals with 14 points, scoring 10 in the second half. Jamarion Draper scored 13 in the win.

Rylan Smothers led Hartselle with 18 points – 16 coming after intermission. He also had a pair of 3-pointers. Ty Odom scored 8 for the Tigers.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Spanish Fort 64, Pace (Fla.) 34

The visitors led 15-14 after one period before Spanish Fort dominated the second and third periods, outscoring the Patriots 46-10. The win is the third straight for the 4-4 Toros.

Josh Powell led Spanish Fort with 21 points. Lucca Nelson scored 12 in the win while Patrick Nelson dished out 4 assists to go with 8 points.

Baker 64, Vigor 62 (OT)

The Hornets rallied from a 46-41 third-quarter deficit to send the game into overtime and outscored homestanding Vigor 7-4 in the extra period to slip past the Wolves on Monday. Baker is 7-2 on the season.

Mikey Johnson made a free throw with 1:07 left in OT to cut Vigor’s lead to a point, but missed his second free shot. Johnson grabbed a tipped rebound from teammate Derrick Florence and hit a putback layup to give Baker the lead for good.

The winners held Vigor scoreless over the final minute of the game.

Vigor led 12-11 after one quarter and 30-26 at the half. The teams were tied at 57 at the end of regulation.

Desmond Williams led Baker with 26 points and Dashawn Thomas tossed in 18.

Keke Malone led Vigor with 15 points. Aslan Jones and Terrell Johnson added 14 points apiece.

Bayshore Christian 50, Satsuma 29

Sophomore Bobby Bynum scored 11 points to lead the Eagles to the win over Satsuma on the road on Thursday. Sophomore Ryland Bosarge scored 10 in the win.

Bayshore (3-6) will host Robertsdale on Tuesday.

Chickasaw 52, Citronelle 45

The Chieftains improved to 5-1 with the home win on Tuesday. Sydrus Gilmore scored 16 points to lead Chickasaw. Gilmore also had 4 rebounds.

Jamarion Osborne scored 13 points and Javon Mose had 12 points and 8 rebounds.

On Monday, Chickasaw beat Alma Bryant 60-54 in Irvington. The Chieftains built a 20-point leads and held off Alma Bryant’s 14-3 run in the fourth quarter.

Osborne led Chickasaw with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Gilmore scored 10 in the win. Robert Jackson and Marvin Brooks had 10 points apiece with Brooks grabbing 6 rebounds.

Chickasaw plays at Mobile Christian on Tuesday.

Robertsdale 48, Citronelle 40

The Golden Bears rallied from a 24-21 halftime deficit, outscoring Citronelle 15-7 in the third period – and 27-16 in the second half – to get the home win on Thursday.

Gabe Stevens scored 18 points and had 4 assists for Robertsdale. Kole Singler added 10 points in the win.

Justin Adams led Citronelle with 15 points.

Robertsdale (4-4) hosts Fairhope on Friday.

Daphne 56, Robertsdale 38

The Trojans rolled to the home win on Tuesday, pulling to a 23-14 halftime edge and a 42-25 lead headed into the final period.

Javon Dailey scored 22 points for Daphne (4-4). Antonie Sledge scored 12 points in the win.

Tanner Williams led Robertsdale with 12 points.

Georgiana 85, Straughn 56

The Panthers opened the season with the big win at home on Monday. Jaden Stallworth led Georgiana with a double-double – 21 points and 18 rebounds.

Marques Payton tossed in 17 points in the win. Kaveon Miles scored 15, Noah Nelson had 14 and Jacobie Morgan added 13.

McIntosh 66, Clarke County 49

The Demons improved to 4-1 on the season with the road win at Grove Hill. Brittney Reed, a 6-foot-7, 240-pound senior, led McIntosh with 19 points, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks and 3 steals.

Corey Williams scored 14 points in the win with 3 steals and 2 blocks. Dristen Sullivan had a double-double with 10 points, 11 assists with 4 steals.

Class 1A McIntosh has wins over Chickasaw, St. Paul’s and Alabama School of Math & Science with a loss to 3A Sumter Central.

Williamson 48, St. Michael 43

The Lions picked up the road win on Tuesday to improve to 5-2 on the year.

Silas Evans had a double-double for Williamson with 16 points and 15 rebounds to go with 3 blocked shots. Corien Coleman had 10 points and 4 steals and Johnathan Johnson grabbed 9 rebounds.

Williamson travels to McGill-Toolen on Friday at 7 p.m.

Cottage Hill 66, McGill-Toolen 60

Clay Scofield led the Warriors with 28 points and 7 rebounds in the home win on Tuesday. Cottage Hill improves to 7-2 on the season.

Shadrick Toodle tossed in 22 points in the win.

Theodore 50, Biloxi (Miss.) 47

Theodore won its second straight on late-game heroics from Houston Cunningham. The junior guard sank a 3-point shot with 1.9 seconds remaining to give the Bobcats the win at Biloxi on Thursday.

JJ Bush led all scorers with 18 points while Cunningham added 12.

Theodore is 5-3 on the year and will host B.C. Rain on Friday.

On Tuesday, Cunningham sank a 3-pointer to lift the Bobcats to a 1-point lead over Davidson in overtime and later added a pair of free throws for the final 53-50 margin.

Bush led Theodore with 13 points and Cunningham finished with 11.

BIRMINGHAM

Fairfield 55, Central-Tuscaloosa 29

The Tigers (5-1) won in a runaway in Tuscaloosa on Thursday. Josiah Jones, a 5-foot-11 junior guard, led Fairfield with 18 points. Jones also had 5 assists. Milton Jones scored 13 and had 7 rebounds.

Thaddeus Long scored 9 to lead Central-Tuscaloosa.

Fairfield hosts Woodlawn on Friday.

Hoover 63, Oxford 40

The undefeated Bucs rolled to the home win on Tuesday. Hoover is 8-0 on the season and will host Spain Park at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Salim London poured in 31 points for Hoover. He also had 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Dewayne Brown grabbed 11 rebounds to go with 8 points.

Midfield 54, Elkmont 41

The Patriots improved to 5-2 on the season with the home win on Thursday.

CJ Woods scored 11 points and had 4 rebounds for Midfield. Doniven Wilson scored 10 points and had 3 rebounds. Jashawn Moore hauled in 15 rebounds in the win.

On Monday, Midfield topped Jackson-Olin 63-52 at home. Dujuan McKinney scored 14 points to lead the Patriots.

Brandon Riddle and Vincent Burrell scored 11 points apiece for Midfield. Riddle had 8 rebounds and Burrell finished with 5.

Thompson 78, Prattville 31

The Warriors rolled early and late in the rout of Prattville on Tuesday at Thompson. The Warriors led 19-4 after one quarter, 36-15 at the half and 60-29 headed into the final period. Thompson outscored the visitors 18-2 in the fourth quarter.

Ty Bryant and Donavan Brown led Prattville with 11 points apiece.

STATEWIDE

Montgomery Academy 55, Prattville Christian 41

The Eagles outscored Prattville Christian 33-17 in the second half to break open a tie game at the half. DJ Vinson notched a double-double for Montgomery Academy with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Seth Edwards also scored 12 points with 8 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Skyler Stovall finished with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.

Cole Caddell had 8 points and 5 rebounds while Brewer Welch had 10 assists to go with 7 points, 4 rebounds and 5 steals. Jarrett Friendly added 6 rebounds and 2 steals.

PJ Evans led Prattville Christian with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Collier Connell added 15 points with 5 rebounds. Lathan Rybarczyk had 6 rebounds in the loss.

Montgomery Academy is 6-1 and will play at Chilton County on Friday.

On Monday, the Eagles beat Indian Springs 72-68 at home, outscoring the visitors 22-13 in the second period.

Stovall led Montgomery Academy with 25 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals. Welch had 19 points, with four 3-pointers, 6 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals. Caddell had 19 points – 15 in the first half – with 3 assists. Edwards had 6 rebounds to go with his 6 points.

Alabama Christian 48, Prattville Christian 47

The Eagles earned the home win, dropping Prattville Christian to 2-5 on the season.

Cade Segars led PCA with 25 points and 6 rebounds. Collier Connell scored 11 points with 4 rebounds. PJ Evans had 5 rebounds and 5 assists and Lathan Rybarczyk grabbed 6 rebounds.

Paul Bryant 41, Sparkman 39

Paul Bryant edged the Senators in the game played at Calhoun Community College. Rafe Merriweather led the Stampede with 14 points.

Marchello Perkins and Adrian Wooley scored 10 points apiece in the win.

Makhi Hammond led the Senators with 14 points.

Francis Marion 51, Central-Tuscaloosa 49

Tayshun Essex scored 18 points to boost Francis Marion to the road win on Tuesday. Malachi Martin scored 11 for the Rams and DJ Brooks added 10.

Phillip Odom led Central with 14 points. King Larkin and Aaron Bell had 11 points apiece for the Falcons.

GIRLS

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Daphne 63, Robertsdale 17

Addison Luker led 10 players in scoring for 9-0 Daphne in the home win over Robertsdale on Tuesday. Luker tossed in 19 points.

Kiera Watson scored 11 points and La’Merrica Johnson added 10 in the win.

On Monday, the Trojans beat St. Paul’s 62-44. Watson had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Abby Johnson scored 15 points and had 5 assists. Sophomore Kamorya Johnson had 7 points and 5 rebounds.

Daphne host Spanish Fort on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

McGill-Toolen 51, Satsuma 12

The Yellow Jackets started the home game on Wednesday with an 18-0 run and cruised past Satsuma. McGill-Toolen is 7-2 on the season.

Freshman Reagan Burroughs led the winners, notching a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Albanie Dixon had 16 points and 7 rebounds.

Brylee Byrd led Satsuma with 8 points.

McGill-Toolen will host Williamson on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Fairhope 56, Faith Academy 51

Ella Byrd scored 15 points to lead Fairhope in scoring in the win.

Peyton Frazer added 14 points and claimed 7 rebounds.

Gulf Shores 42, Murphy 29

The Dolphins ran their record to 8-1 on the season with the win at home on Tuesday. Gulf Shores jumped to a 24-6 halftime lead.

Point guard Maya Griffin scored 14 points for Gulf Shores.

Kimani Lambert and Jasmine Hobbs led Murphy with 7 points each.

Gulf Shores will play in the Us vs. Them Hoop Fest at St. Martin, Miss., on Saturday.

UMS-Wright 45, Murphy 36

The Bulldogs, playing their ninth straight road game on Wednesday, rallied from as many as 14 points behind to top Murphy. UMS-Wright improved to 8-3 on the season.

Junior Ellie Mostellar led the winners with 12 points. Senior Noel Freeman registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

On Monday, the Bulldogs beat Saraland 65-52 as four players finished scoring in double figures. Freeman led all scorers with 16 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds and had 5 steals and 5 blocks.

Katharine Goodloe scored 14 in the win. Ansleigh Ishee scored 12 and Mostellar added 10.

Braley Weaver and Raine Lofton scored 10 points each for Saraland.

The Bulldogs travel to Mobile Christian on Monday.

Georgiana 51, Straughn 44

The Panthers improved to 3-1 on the year with the home win on Monday.

Nyeshia Thomas poured in 20 points and hauled down 19 rebounds in the win. Lillie Boggan had 20 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.

Mobile Christian 66, Alabama School of Math & Science 14

Mobile Christian improved to 7-0 with the rout on the road on Monday.

Trenity Jenkins-Gaines scored 16 for the Leopards. Kayleigh Todd and Molly Chandler-Diamond added 10 points each in the win.

Jilliana Borgrud scored 9 points for ASMS.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Lee-Huntsville 76, New Hope 51

Senior guard Limaya Batimba ran her double-double streak to eight opening the season as the Generals beat New Hope at home on Thursday. The 5-8 Batimba poured in 29 points and hauled down 13 rebounds to go with 3 steals in the win.

Lee led 17-11 after one quarter, 34-25 at the half and pushed the advantage to 53-36 headed into the fourth.

Jayla Turner scored 11 points in the win. London Harris and Sania Lipscomb added 10 points each.

Kaylee Yarbrough exploded for 37 points for New Hope.

Hazel Green 46, Sparkman 40

The six-time defending Class 6A state champions ran their record to 8-0 on the year with the road win on Tuesday.

Kristen Johnson led the Trojans with 16 points. University of Alabama signee Leah Brooks had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Brett Douglas hauled down 10 rebounds.

Abethany James led Sparkman with 12 points.

Sparkman travels to Madison to play Bob Jones on Friday.

Priceville 70, Madison County 44

The Bulldogs used a balanced scoring attack to earn the home win over Madison County on Thursday. Priceville led 34-20 at the half and pushed its advantage to 59-32 headed into the final quarter.

Gracin Prater led Priceville with 16 points. She also had 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Abby Langlois scored 15 points and had 8 rebounds with 3 blocked shots. Amberleigh Dean scored 11 points and had 3 assists. Rachel Rotermund grabbed 6 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Sydney Gurley led Madison County with 11 points.

On Monday, the Bulldogs whipped Danville 77-41 at home, racing to a 23-12 first-quarter lead and pulling to a 43-21 halftime advantage. Priceville led 64-33 headed into the final quarter.

Abby Langlois scored 19 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, had 5 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks for Priceville. Ashlyn Johnson scored 15 in the win with 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Carly Nelson added 13 points for Priceville (2-4).

Madalyn McCreless led Danville with 18 points. She also had 2 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Adily Alberti had 8 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

Danville 47, Covenant Christian 32

Danville picked up the road win in Tuscumbia on Tuesday as Adily Alberti scored 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Olivia Vest scored 8 points with 3 rebounds and a pair of steals.

Reagan Prater had 7 points and 7 rebounds while Maddie Sherrill had 6 points and 6 rebounds with 3 steals.

Sand Rock 69, Piedmont 50

The Wildcats rolled in the home game on Thursday to improve to 6-2 on the season. Katelyn St.Clair poured in 29 points with 7 rebounds and 4 assists for Sand Rock.

Zoey Handy notched a double-double with 19 points with 11 rebounds. She also had 7 steals. Kennedy Henderson grabbed 8 rebounds.

On Tuesday, Sand Rock beat Sylvania 71-46 on the road.

St.Clair and Handy dominated on the offensive end with St.Clair scoring 25 points with 5 assists and Handy pouring in 24 points with 9 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 blocks.

BIRMINGHAM

Homewood 71, Oak Mountain 32

The Patriots improved to 9-2 on the season with the win at home on Tuesday.

Kayla Warren led Homewood with 14 points with 4 assists. Mira McCool scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Mira McCool added 13 points with 6 rebounds. Savannah McDonald scored 10 points and had 3 rebounds for Homewood.

Hoover 57, Plainview 36

The Bucs won their fourth straight and first home game of the season on Thursday. Hoover raced to a 23-9 first-quarter lead and led 30-19 at the half. It was Hoover 43, Plainview 34 after three quarters before the Bucs outscored the visitors 14-2 to close out the win.

Aliyah Blanchard led Hoover with 14 points. Khloe Ford had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Kaitlyn Gipson finished with 12 points in the win.

STATEWIDE

Prattville Christian 48, Montgomery Academy 25

Prattville Christian remained unbeaten at 6-0 with the runaway win at home on Tuesday. Kayden Carr and Jenna McClendon poured in 23 points each for the Panthers. McClendon also hauled in 11 rebounds while Carr hard 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Avery Rogers scored 13 points for Prattville Christian with 6 assists and 5 rebounds.

PCA will host Trinity on Friday.

Lakeside 44, Springwood School 38

Freshman Allison Erickson recorded her second straight double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as the Eufaula squad beat Springwood of Lanett on Tuesday. Erickson also had 7 blocks as the Chiefs improved to 4-3.

Chloe Helms scored 14 points, with 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in the win.
