Basketball roundup: Hoover boys roll to 7-0 record on year

Defending state champion Hoover stayed unbeaten on the year on Saturday, rolling past Gray Collegiate Academy 59-42 to win the championship of the Kevin Brown Memorial Tournament of Champions in Washington, Ill. The Bucs are 7-0.

Salim London was named most valuable player of the finals and selected as a member of the all-tournament team. London, a 6-foot-5 junior, scored 28 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and dished out 3 assists with 3 steals in the championship win over the West Columbia, S.C. squad.

DeWayne Brown, a 6-9 junior, was also an all-tourney pick after registering a double-double in the win with 21 points and 22 rebounds.

Hoover hosts Oxford on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

BOYS

LIGHTHOUSE CLASSIC

Huntsville 65, St. Thomas More Catholic (La.) 47

Brayden Rivers boosted Huntsville to a win on Saturday in the 10th annual Lighthouse Classic in Corinth, Miss. The 6-foot-7 junior scored a career-high 24 points, hauled in 5 rebounds and blocked 2 shots for the Crimson Panthers. Rivers hit four 3-pointers in the win.

Caleb Harrison had a double-double 8-1 Huntsville with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Simon Walker scored 13 points for the Panthers. JD Gossett grabbed 8 rebounds and had 5 assists. Eli Stapler added 4 assists.

Huntsville trailed 13-12 after one quarter, but rallied to lead 28-24 at the half. The Panthers outscored St. Thomas More of Lafayette, La., winners of four state championships since 2016, 37-23 after intermission.

The Panthers made 45 percent of their shots from the floor – 33 percent on 22 3-point attempts – and hit 8-of-13 free throws. St. Thomas More shot 34 percent from the field. Huntsville outrebounded the Cougars 40-25 and won the turnover battle 12-9.

Huntsville will host Buckhorn at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

CALHOUN HOLIDAY CLASSIC

Florence 84, Northeast Lauderdale (Miss.) 66

The Falcons knocked down 10 3-point buckets in the win on Friday at Calhoun Community College in Decatur.

Julian King was the top scorer of four in double figures for Florence (3-2) with 18 points. Bryant James scored 15, Jamarrion Reeder pitched in 13 and Jayshod Pearson added 11.

Florence travels to Cullman on Tuesday.

GIRLS

MUSTANGS THANKSGIVING CLASSIC

Sparkman 60, Green Forest (Ga.) 43

The Senators went 1-1 in the tournament at Morrow High School in Ellenwood, Ga., with the win on Saturday over Green Forest of Decatur, Ga.

Sparkman (5-2) had four players hit double-figures scoring, with sophomores Elise McClain and Hannah Horton tossing in 12 points each. Abethany James and Khloe Bradley added 11 points each in the win.

On Friday, Maynard Jackson of Atlanta topped the Senators 51-43. Taleih Cornish led the Jaguars with 18 points.

Bradley and Horton led Sparkman with 11 points each.

Sparkman will host six-time defending Class 6A Hazel Green on Tuesday.
