Basketball roundup: Hazel Green girls win 77th straight

Top-ranked Class 6A Hazel Green ran its season record to 18-0 with a 65-23 win at home over Muscle Shoals on Wednesday. The five-time defending state champion Trojans have won 77 straight, trailing the Alabama High School Athletic Association all-time consecutive wins leader Lauderdale County by nine.

Lauderdale County, which with Pisgah also has five straight state championships, won 86 consecutive games from 2013-15. The Tigers’ streak ended on Dec. 1, 2015.

Five Trojans scored in double figures in a balanced offensive attack on Wednesday. Jaden Toney led Hazel Green with 13 points. Nyla Collier had 12 points with 7 assists and Leah Brooks had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Zyriah Price scored 10 points and had 5 rebounds. Amiya Redus also scored 10 in the win.

Tamora Brown led Muscle Shoals with 9 points. Makenzie Sears added 6.

Hazel Green opens Area 16 play today at 6 p.m. at home against Mae Jemison. Muscle Shoals opens Area 15 play at home against Athens, also at 6 p.m.

CLASS 7A

Lafayette 44, Sparkman 36: Second-ranked Sparkman fell in the opening game of the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic in metro New Orleans on Thursday to defending tournament champion Lafayette, La.

The Senators trailed 12-4 after one quarter in the low-scoring contest and 17-10 at the half. Sparkman pulled to a 29-26 lead headed into the final quarter.

Jamya Griffin led Sparkman with 14 points.

Sparkman (14-6) plays Vanderbilt Catholic of New Orleans today at 3:30 in the tournament at the Alario Center in Westwego, La.

Alma Bryant 65, B.C. Rain 19: Madi-Marie Grayson poured in 36 points and made 7 steals in the runaway win. Mari-Margret Grayson scored 15 points with 6 steals and a pair of blocks.

Alma Bryant improved to 9-8 on the season. The Hurricanes host St. Martin of Ocean Springs, Miss., on Saturday.

CLASS 6A

McGill-Toolen 47, Ellender Memorial (La.) 35: The fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets improved to 16-3 with the win over Ellender Memorial of Houma, La., in the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic in metro New Orleans on Thursday.

Point guard Lindsey Cox led McGill-Toolen with a double-double, scoring 23 points and claiming 11 rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets will play on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Alario Center in Westwego, La.

Parker 56 Wenonah 54: No. 8 Parker improved to 14-3 on the season with the Wednesday win. Sophomore point guard Otiscia Towns scored 17 points with 5 assists and a pair of steals.

Senior forward Takyya Blanton scored 12 points and had 3 blocks. Junior guard Alteona Plump scored 11 points with 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Freshman guard Taniya Smith also scored 11 points.

Homewood 64, Jackson-Olin 24: The Patriots improved to 16-4 overall with the win in the Area 9 opener. Homewood is 13-1 in home games this season.

Kayla Warren led the winners with 14 points, 6 assists and 4 steals. Laine Litton added 10 points for Homewood. Annie McBride scored 7 points with 3 steals and Molly Dorough grabbed 5 rebounds to go with her 6 points.

CLASS 5A

St. Paul’s 55, Faith Academy 47: Ella Vallas poured in 23 points and hauled down 19 rebounds to lead the Saints past Faith Academy on Wednesday. The win pushed St. Paul’s to 11-7 on the year and 3-0 in Area 2 play.

Margaret Wilson scored 12 points for St. Paul’s and Tori Passeau added 8.

Kellyn Hunter led Faith Academy with 23 points. Ja’teralun Hamilton scored 13 in the setback.

Holtville 65, Notasulga 21: Julie Nekolna scored the first 18 points of the game on Wednesday, leading the Bulldogs to an 18-0 lead with 3:15 left in the first quarter. The 6-foot-2 junior guard/forward finished with 31 points and 6 rebounds in just over 13 minutes of playing time.

Holly Smith scored 13 for Holtville and grabbed a team-leading 7 rebounds. Ana Brown had 11 assists.

CLASS 4A

Prattville Christian 57, Pelham 27: Third-ranked Prattville Christian improved to 17-2 on the season with the home win over Class 6A Pelham on Thursday.

Hannah Jones poured in 25 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the winners. CoCo Thomas had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with her 4 assists and 4 steals. Avery Rogers scored 12 points and had 4 rebounds for PCA.

Prattville Christian will host Booker T. Washington Magnet on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. to open Area 5 play.

CLASS 2A

Falkville 50, Danville 41: The Class 2A Blue Devils rallied in the fourth quarter to earn the back-and-forth road victory on Wednesday. The home team led 16-11 after one quarter, but trailed 28-22 at the half. The Hawks led 36-34 headed into the final quarter, but Falkville outscored the home team 16-5 for the win.

Ellie Cate Hill and Ella Wallace scored 16 points each for the winners. Hill had four 3-pointers and was perfect on four free throws. Abbey Tomlin added 10 points for the Blue Devils.

Madalyn McCreless scored 15 points for 3A Danville. Elisabeth Hand grabbed 13 rebounds for the Hawks. Ella Kate Tidwell had 8 points.

CLASS 1A

Covenant Christian 56, Lindsay Lane 41: Ashley Gann recorded a double-double to lead the winners, scoring 25 points and notching 11 steals.

Kristen Shaw added 10 points for the Eagles.

BOYS

CLASS 6A

Blount 52, Theodore 47: The sixth-ranked Leopards improved to 11-5 with the home win in the Area 1 opener on Wednesday night.

Devontaey Woulard led Blount with 15 points and 5 assists. Antonio Jackson registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He also had 6 blocked shots. Jerry Brand scored 10 points and had 4 steals in the win.

Pelham 56, Prattville Christian 54: Kamari Hollis hit the game-winning bucket with 7 seconds remaining in the game at Prattville on Thursday.

The visitors led 14-13 after one quarter, but trailed 30-28 at the half. The teams were knotted at 43 headed into the final period.

Hollis led Pelham with 20 points. Joe Wimberly added 18 for the winners.

Conner Williams led Prattville Christian with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Carson Roberson scored 14 points and had 4 assists. PJ Evans had a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 assists. Cade Segars scored 11 points in the loss for PCA (8-10).

Prattville Christian opens Class 4A Area 5 play on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. with a home game vs. Booker T. Washington Magnet.

Pelham opens Area 8 play at home against Briarwood Christian at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

CLASS 4A

Haleyville 61, Hamilton 39: The ninth-ranked Lions hit eight 3-pointers to earn the Area 12 road win on Wednesday to improve to 8-8 on the year. It was Haleyville’s fifth straight win over Hamilton.

Drake James led Haleyville with 22 points and Bryant James tossed in 18.

Josh Webb scored 12 points to lead Hamilton (2-12).

Haleyville hosts Cordova on Friday in another Area 12 games while Hamilton plays at home vs. Dora.

Dale County 58, Cottonwood 49: The Warriors picked up the home win to improve to 9-8 on the season.

Dale County had a pair of players – a senior and a freshman – record double-doubles in the win. Senior Nick McCarter scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Junior Smith, a 6-foot-6 freshman, hauled down 20 rebounds to go with his 12 points and 7 assists.

Senior guard Jamarion Scott led Dale County with 16 points.

Westminster Christian 60, Mars Hill 45: Class 4A No. 3 Westminster earned the win on the road over 2A No. 5 Mars Hill on Thursday, dominating on the backboards with 13 offensive rebounds.

Westminster (15-3) outrebounded the Panthers 33-16 with 17 second-chance points.

Junior Chase McCarty poured in 25 points for the winners. Seniors Eric Robinson and Jackson Hammond contributed 14 and 8 points, respectively.

The Wildcats shot 52 percent from the floor, hitting 27-of-51 shots. Mars Hill made 38 percent of its 44 field-goal attempts.

The Panthers made 8-of-21 shots from behind the 3-point arc, with Hugh Hargett leading Mars Hill (10-4) with 18 points thanks to 5-of-9 3-pointers. Carson Thrasher scored 8 points for Mars Hill.

Westminster led 16-12 after one quarter and 32-22 at the half. Mars Hill hit 3-of-4 3-pointers on the way to a 16-9 advantage in the third period to narrow the lead to 41-38 headed into the final quarter.

The Wildcats put the game away in the final period, outscoring the home team 19-7 with 9 points from McCarty and 6 from Robinson down the stretch.

Westminster was 2-for-2 on free throws while Mars Hill made 3-of-5 on the night.

CLASS 1A

Bayshore Christian 39, McIntosh 38: Senior Jack Howley hit a layup with 6 seconds left to lift the Eagles to the home win in Area 1 play.

Junior Collin Hester led Bayshore (8-9) with 19 points. Junior Carter Frego added 10 points in the win.

Bayshore Christian will host Leroy on Friday.

Covenant Christian 61, Lindsay Lane 33: Jalen Chandler led the way for the Eagles with 14 points. Trey Kellogg added 12 for Covenant Christian.
