Basketball roundup: Faith Academy runs past LeFlore

Basketball roundup: Faith Academy runs past LeFlore

Davon Carter led all scorers with 26 points — 15 of them coming in a pivotal third period — as Faith Academy defeated visiting LeFlore 65-43 in Class 5A Area 2 boys’ basketball action on Tuesday night.

Carter connected on five 3-pointers and Tank Spears added 13 points and LJ Holifield 12 as all nine Faith Academy players saw action. The Rams improved to 12-8 overall and 1-2 in the area.

“We were only concerned with going out and playing a solid game and whatever happens, happens,” said Faith Academy head coach Chad Applin. “We were just concerned with playing like we’re really capable of playing and we had some guys to step up tonight.

“We have trouble scoring at times, and when Davon got going, that just opened up the floodgates for us. He can shoot, but we need to work on his free throws because he left six or seven more points on the floor. I just want him to play like I know he’s capable of playing.”

No LeFlore players were in double figures, as a stout Ram defense made things difficult for the Rattlers (12-4, 1-1) to do much offensively in the second half. Brittney Reed and Labrandon Walton scored 8 points each.

“Winning really covers up a lot of things,” said LeFlore head coach Jeffrey Pope. “I think it was just one of those nights where a lot of things just got exposed, but I think it’ll be good for us. Coach Applin does a really good job; he had his kids ready to play tonight so my hat goes off to him.”

Faith took an 18-8 lead at the end of the first period, but LeFlore battled back and trimmed the margin to 25-20 at the half. In the third period, however, the Rams took control of the game and went on an 11-4 run, thanks in part to Carter’s hot hand. In that period, he connected on three of his five 3-pointers.

“I’ve been talking to Davon about being more aggressive because we needed him to be more aggressive offensively,” Applin said. “I actually told him that I wanted him to work to score and we’re just a much better team when he does that. At halftime, the last thing I said to him and to the team was, ‘You can’t disappear offensively.’

“Davon started the season off well, but then went into a funk. I think he’s out of that now. I just want him to keep doing what he’s doing. He played great tonight.”

Faith led by 16 at the end of the third period, and by the time Carter fouled out with 1:57 left in the game, the Rams were up by 19 and the game well out of reach.

Both teams are in action Friday night, with Faith hosting Citronelle and LeFlore playing at Vigor.
