Bob Jones swept Madison intercity rival James Clemens over the weekend to claim the Class 7A Area 8 baseball championship. The Patriots’ 4-2 win over the Jets on the road on Friday clinched the area crown and Jared Smith’s squad finished the sweep with 9-5 and 7-6 wins at home on Saturday.

Fifth-ranked Bob Jones ran its record to 33-9 on the year and will host Chelsea on Friday at 5 p.m. in a 7A playoff opening-round showdown. No. 8 James Clemens (28-12) finished second in the area and will play at Spain Park on Friday at 5.

In Friday’s 4-2 win, the Patriots scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, James Clemens tied it in the bottom of the fifth before Bob Jones pushed across two more in the top of the sixth. The Patriots overcame two errors to earn the win.

Nathan Mayfield went 1-for-3 with a home run and a pair of RBIs for Bob Jones. CJ Bush was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Aidan Doyle and Zackary Johnson also had hits in the win.

Samuel Mitchell struck out 10 to pick up the complete-game win. He gave up two earned runs on nine hits and walked one.

Colten Payton went 2-for-2 with a double and Nathan Guyse was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored for James Clemens. Andrew Lawrence went 2-for-3 in the loss.

Luke Davenport was saddled with the loss, giving up four runs – three earned – on five hits with seven strikeouts. He walked three over seven innings.

In Saturday’s 9-5 win, Benjamin Arn struck out six, gave up six hits and five runs over six innings to get the win and five Patriots had extra-base hits, with leadoff man Braden Booth smacking a home run and a double in his 3-for-3 effort. Booth had two RBIs and scored one run.

Samuel Vander Hill tripled for Bob Jones and Bush and Jacob Pearl had doubles. Bush was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Pearl drove in a run. Doyle went 2-for-3.

Mason Busch took the loss for James Clemens, giving up five earned runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings. He struck out one and walked three.

Ty Marsh went 1-for-1 with a double and two RBIs and two runs scored for the Jets. Satchel Wheeler was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Lawrence was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Carson Loosier was 2-for-4 with a double.

In the final game of the series, Bob Jones scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with the win. James Clemens scored five runs in the top of the first and added one in the fifth to carry a 6-5 lead into the final inning. Bob Jones answered the Jets’ big inning with four runs in the bottom of the first and tied the game at 5-all with one in the second.

Vander Hill and Doyle homered. Vander Hill was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Doyle had a pair of RBIs. Booth was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Mitchell drove in a run.

Booth won the game with six innings in relief of Tanner Hermesch. Booth struck out eight, walked three and gave up one earned run on three hits. Hermesch struck out two and gave up five runs on three hits in one inning.

Gavin Harris took the loss for James Clemens, pitching five innings in relief of Wheeler. Harris struck out seven and walked three. He gave up two earned run on four hits. Wheeler gave up five earned runs on six hits – including two homers. He walked three in one inning.

Marsh doubled for the Jets and drove in two runs. Aidan Cook was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Wheeler was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

SOFTBALL

Lawrence County 4, Hazel Green 3: The Class 5A Red Devils knocked off Class 6A No. 9 Hazel Green on Saturday at a tournament at Curry High School. Lawrence County scored three runs in the top of the first inning and scored one in the fifth – and final – inning for the win. Hazel Green scored one in the second and a pair in the third. Both teams had seven hits on the day.

Earlier in the day, host and Class 4A No. 1 Curry beat Lawrence County 8-7.

Bella Cross earned the win against Hazel Green, allowing three runs – two earned – in five innings. She struck out one and walked two.

Ava Templeton had a triple with two RBIs for the Red Devils. Cross was 2-for-3 at the plate and Adagrace Calhoun was 1-for-3 with an RBI. A Plaxco also had an RBI for Lawrence County.

Mason Quinnie took the loss for Hazel Green, give up four earned runs on seven hits in five innings. She struck out two and walked three. At the plate, Quinnie was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Payton Pike drove in two runs for the Trojans. Sarah Snowden and Briley Zimmerman went 1-for-3 with a run scored each.

Curry’s 8-7 win came in six innings as the Yellow Jackets scored six in the bottom of the first, one in the fourth and one in the bottom of the sixth. Lawrence County scored one in the top of the first and five in the fifth to tie the game. The Red Devils scored one in the top of the sixth.

Andee McKay went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored for Lawrence County. McKenzie Hyche had a pair of doubles with three RBIs and a run scored. Raegan Johnson had an RBI. Cross and Templeton were 2-for-3 with a run scored each.

Kaytie LouAllen took the loss in the circle, allowing six earned runs on five hits in 1.1 innings. She struck out two and walked two.

Ella Reese Wright earned the win for Curry. She gave up six earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Jenna Madison doubled twice and drove in two runs for the Yellow Jackets. Sydney Mancone and Aubrey Lackey were both 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

On Friday Lawrence County split a pair of games in a tournament at Vestavia Hills. The host team, ranked fifth in Class 7A, beat the Red Devils 17-5 and Lawrence County topped American Christian 5-0.

Hyche took the loss against Vestavia Hills, giving up 12 runs – 11 earned – on six hits. She struck out three and walked five in 4.1 innings.

The Red Devils got three home runs, from McKay, Hyche and Calhoun. McKay and Hyche had a pair of RBIs each. Templeton doubled for Lawrence County.

Tait Davidson earned the win for Vestavia Hills, giving up five runs – three earned – on seven hits. She struck out three.

Miah Simmons smacked two home runs and was one of three Rebels to drive in five runs, joining Kayla Franklin and Ella Gallaspy. Gallaspy had two doubles, Franklin and Catherine Cassimus had one each.

Cross got the shutout win in the circle vs. American Christian. She gave up six hits, with one strikeout and one walk.

Hyche went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Cross was 2-for-3 with one run batted in.

Sydney Elam took the loss for American Christian, allowing five runs – one earned – on six hits. She struck out four and walked one.
