Basketball roundup: Baker slips past rival Theodore

The Hornets didn’t have their coach along for the ride, but even without him Baker outlasted rival Theodore 65-62 on the road on Friday. Baker head coach David Armstrong was on the injury list for the game – out with the flu.

Senior guard Dashawn Thomas poured in 26 points to lead Baker in the win. The 6-foot-3 Thomas went 6-of-10 from 3-point range, including the game-winner.

Junior 6-5 forward Derrick Florence had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Hornets. Senior Lovalle Nelson scored 16 points in the win.

Baker (19-7) hosts Class 7A No. 7 Mary G. Montgomery for an Area 1 game on Tuesday.

Robertsdale 55, Satsuma 33

Kole Singer scored 22 points and Gabe Stevens added 10 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds for the Golden Bears (11-13) in the win on Saturday.

Jermiah Wells led Satsuma with 11 points.

Robertsdale hosts Spanish Fort on Tuesday.

Mobile Christian 66, Cottage Hill 63

Senior Michael Moore scored 18 points as Mobile Christian upset Class 3A No. 3 Cottage Hill on the road Friday night.

Moore’s layup gave the Leopards (13-8) a 3-point lead with 6.5 seconds left.

Sophomore Sema’J Law had 16 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Junior Nicklaus Allen had 12 points, all on 3-pointers. Freshman Rico Prince Jr. had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The win was Mobile Christian’s first over Cottage Hill since the 2019-2020 season. The Leopards host Saraland on Tuesday.

Jackson 48, Escambia County 44

No. 4 Jackson rallied from a 30-14 halftime deficit to knock off No. 8 Escambia County in a Top 10 battle in Class 4A, Area 2.

Keeyun Chapman had 16 points and 8 rebounds for the Aggies (18-2, 3-0). William Joseph Taylor contributed 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

Micah Caster added 12 points and 3 assists.

Jackson plays at Satsuma on Tuesday.

Mary G. Montgomery 59, Alma Bryant 30

Class 7A No. 7 MGM blitzed Alma Bryant behind 14 points from Erik Washington and 11 points each from Zion Hunter and AJ Johnson.

The Vikings improved to 20-3 overall and 2-1 in Area 1 play and travel to Baker on Tuesday night.

Vigor 75, St. Paul’s 56

With Ohio State football coach Ryan Day in attendance, No. 6 Vigor improved to 19-5 and 6-0 in Class 5A, Area 2 play.

Day was likely there to watch top Mobile prospects Micah DeBose (Vigor) and Anthony Jones (St. Paul’s).

Terrell Johnson led the way with 21 points for the Wolves. Al Holcombe followed with 13 and Jermaine Tate had 11.

“We came out and played really fast and aggressive,” Vigor coach Jairus Jackson said. “We also shot the ball well from the perimeter and shared the ball really well. Tonight was a great team win.”

The Wolves play at Faith Academy on Monday.

UMS-Wright 56, Bayside Academy 53 (2OT)

UMS led 2-0 to start the game, but didn’t lead again until the first overtime.

Jack Blackerby’s 3-point shot tied the game at 40-40 late in the fourth quarter and forced overtime.

Sims Druhan led the Bulldogs with 19 points. Jeff Holston scored 15 – all after halftime – and Joe Lott added 8.

Sammy Dunn led Bayside with 15 points.

UMS (11-13 overall, 4-1 in Class 4A, Area 1) will host Orange Beach on Tuesday.

McGill-Toolen 78, Robertsdale 42

Senior Zach Patrick scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the first half and junior Ethan Stokes finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead No. 6-ranked McGill-Toolen to a Class 6A, Area 2 home win on Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets, a night after beating Murphy 39-36, shot 50 percent in the first quarter and exploded for 20 points, including 8 from Patrick.

That’s when Stokes took over with an 8-point second quarter. Owen Norwood added 5 in the quarter, and the lead ballooned to 46-20 at half. Jack Murphy, who finished with 15 points, hit for 7 of his points in the third. The defense did the rest, limiting the Golden Bears to 8 points in the final quarter.

Ten different Jackets scored in the game.

McGill (18-5, 4-0) can clinch the regular-season area title Tuesday when it hosts Baldwin County.

Gabe Stevens led Robertsdale with 16 points.

Williamson 60, Elberta 30

Jonathan Johnson had 19 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks as Class 5A No. 5 Williamson defeated Elberta to improve to 19-6 overall. Corien Coleman added 17 points and 4 steals.

Williamson travels to B.C. Rain on Tuesday.

Murphy 67, Saraland 54

Kinley Simmons scored 24 points as Murphy bounced back from a Thursday night loss to rival McGill-Toolen with a win over the Spartans.

Bryan Jackson added 12 points. DJ Johnson and Cordairus Dixon each scored 11.

BIRMINGHAM

Gardendale 90, Huffman 73

The Rockets rolled past Huffman in a Class 6A, Area 11 game at home on Friday, despite 33 points from the Vikings’ Peyton Wiggins.

Ryan Burkett led Gardendale (13-6) with 23 points and David Rodgers pitched in 22 with 6 rebounds. Cody Vance scored 13 with 7 assists.

Justin Nelson scored 11 for Huffman and Kaleb Carson added 10.

Thompson 65, Hoover 55

No. 10 Thompson rallied to knock off second-ranked Hoover at home on Friday. Hoover led 24-22 at the half before the Warriors outscored the visitors 22-13 in the third period and held off the Bucs in the final period.

Sophomores Colben Landrew and DaeShaun Morrissette led the way for the Warriors. Landrew scored 19 points and finished with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Morrissette scored 17 points, hitting 4-of-5 3-point attempts, and he grabbed 7 rebounds and had 6 assists. Jay Green, another sophomore, scored 12 points and had 4 assists.

Salim London led Hoover (20-3, 2-1 in Area 5) with 22 points and 7 rebounds with 4 assists. DeWayne Brown tossed in 17 points with 11 rebounds and 6 blocked shots.

Hoover will host No. 4 Vestavia Hills for another area game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Fairfield 73, Wenonah 42

Top-ranked Class 5A Fairfield ran away with the Area 9 win at home over Wenonah on Friday.

Sophomore Jody Jones scored 28 points to lead the Tigers. He also grabbed 5 rebounds and had 4 steals with 2 assists. MJ Jones finished with 9 rebounds and a pair of assists. Jeff Duncan, Demarcus Williams and Jumaria Hamilton scored 8 points apiece. Hamilton claimed 10 rebounds in the win. Duncan had 5 steals and 3 assists while Williams dished out 5 assists and had 4 steals.

Mountain Brook 64, Woodlawn 43

Third-ranked Class 6A Mountain Brook earned the Area 10 win at Woodlawn on Friday, with four players finishing in double figures on the night.

Henry Hufham led the Spartans with 15 points. He also had 8 rebounds. Ty Davis scored 13 points with 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Jack Bakken finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and claiming 10 rebounds. Carson Romero added 10 points in the win.

The Spartans are 18-6 on the season.

Midfield 72, Southeastern 31

The fifth-ranked Class 3A Patriots rolled over Southeastern on Saturday.

Aaron Adams-Martin led Midfield with 15 points. He also had 3 assists. Dujuan McKinney scored 12 and Brandon Riddle scored 11 with 4 steals in the win. Armonie Franklin scored 8 points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Doniven Wilson also scored 8 with 3 steals.

Spain Park 82, Indian Springs 54

The Jaguars rolled at home on Saturday to the win over Indian Springs to improve to 13-12 on the season.

Harrison Stewart led Spain Park with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in the win. TJ Lamar scored 14 points and claimed 7 rebounds with a pair of blocked shots.

On Friday, Spain park beat Oak Mountain 48-43 in a Class 7A, Area 6 game at home, improving to 4-0 in area play.

Korbin Long led the Jags with 22 points. He also had 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Lamar scored 13 points and claimed 9 rebounds.

Homewood 66, Minor 48

The Patriots improved to 18-6 on the year with the home win on Friday.

David Stone led Homewood with 28 points and 10 rebounds.

Bessemer Academy 58, Fort Dale Academy 50

Bessemer Academy wrapped up the AISAA Class AAA regular-season region title with the win on Friday.

Johnathan Winston led BA with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Luke Turner and Jacob Brister scored 8 points apiece and Turner grabbed 7 rebounds.

McAdory 86, Brookwood 38

The Yellow Jackets rolled to the Class 6A, Area 7 win at home on Friday. McAdory improved to 14-8 and 3-0 in area play.

Tristan Gilmore led the winners with 27 points and 6 rebounds. Jacorey Whitted notched his 1,000th career point in the win.

Helena 57, Briarwood Christian 43

The Huskies earned a Class 7A, Area 8 win on the road at Briarwood Christian on Friday. Eighth-ranked Helena improved to 18-5 overall and 2-0 in the area.

Josh Williams led the winners with a double-double, scoring 25 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. He also had 8 steals and 3 assists.

Ian Johnigan scored 10 points and had 3 assists. Joseph King scored 8 points, claimed 6 rebounds and had 2 blocked shots.

Pelham 69, Springville 52

The Panthers ran their record to 20-5 with Friday’s win at home over Springville.

Dynarian Long led Pelham with 22 points and 6 rebounds. Joe Wimberly scored 15 points and finished with 4 assists. Samuel Tolbert scored 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds with 5 assists and 4 steals.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Albertville 48, Douglas 43

The Aggies beat Douglas in the opening round of the Marshall County Tournament at Snead State Community College on Saturday. It was the third win for Albertville over Douglas this season.

Douglas led 15-10 after one quarter before the Aggies took a 25-24 halftime lead and a 34-32 advantage into the final period.

The Eagles slowed the pace with their zone defense, but Albertville (19-5) responded by hitting 9-for-21 from behind the 3-point arc. Cooper Calvin, who led the winners with 15 points, hit five of his first seven 3-point attempts and finished 5-for-9.

Sam Barclift and Jon Wesley Seay scored 10 points apiece in the win. Barclift led the Aggies with 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Albertville made 9-of-22 from the foul line on the night, but Barclift hit 6-of-8 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Jaylin Spain scored 14 to lead Douglas and Cooper Butler added 11.

Albertville will face DAR in the second round of the tournament on Monday at 6:15 p.m.

Fort Payne 69, Gadsden City 54

The Class 6A No. 9 Wildcats jumped to a 26-13 first-quarter lead at home on Friday and coasted to the Area 13 win.

“Our effort was really good from the start,” Fort Payne head coach Robert Coker said. “Offensively, we were able to get going early because we shared the ball and took great shots. Gadsden is hard to defend, (Jakobi) Sharp and (Ronan) McFadden put on a show especially from behind the arc. They do a good job of mixing defenses and then on the offensive end, getting their playmakers in advantageous situations.

“It was a must-win game for us in area play and we’re extremely proud of our guys’ approach.”

Josh Scott led Fort Payne with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Luke Stephens scored 18 in the win and JJ Willoughby added 11 points with 7 rebounds.

Sharp led Gadsden City with 19 points. He also had 5 steals. McFadden also tossed in 19 points and Javien McCants added 11.

Fort Payne (22-2, 2-1) travels to Oxford on Tuesday for its final area game.

STATEWIDE

Montgomery Academy 66, Montgomery Catholic 54

The Eagles earned the road win over Montgomery Catholic on Saturday thanks to a 22-8 second quarter explosion that lifted Montgomery Academy to a 10-point halftime lead.

Skyler Stovall led the winners with 21 points and 10 rebounds. He also had 3 steals and 3 assists. Seth Edwards also had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. He had 5 steals and 2 assists.

Cole Caddell scored 11 points with 5 rebounds. Brewer Welch had 8 points with 5 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks. DJ Vinson grabbed 13 rebounds.

MA, ranked No. 10 in Class 3A, improved to 18-6 on the season. The Eagles will host St. James at home on Tuesday in an Area 6 game.

Prattville Christian 69, Wilcox Central 66

The Panthers improved to 3-0 in Class 4A, Area 5 with the home win on Friday.

Cade Segars led Prattville Christian with 26 points. Collier Connell scored 21 and grabbed 4 rebounds. Brady Roberson scored 15 points with 6 assists and 4 steals. PJ Evans had 8 rebounds and 8 assists for PCA (12-11).

Prattville Christian plays another area game on Monday at Dallas County in Plantersville.

Valiant Cross 72, Lee-Scott 59

Seventh-ranked Valiant Cross of Montgomery knocked off No. 2 Lee-Scott of Auburn in a battle of Warriors on Friday at home in AISA play.

Deshawn Hall recorded a double-double with 25 points and 15 rebounds for the winners. He also blocked 5 shots and had 5 steals.

Valiant Cross improved to 17-4 with the win while Lee-Scott dropped to 19-4.

Chambers Academy 52, Lakeside 40

Rhodes Bennett and James Curry registered double-doubles for the Chiefs in the loss to Chambers Academy on Saturday. Bennett scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. He also blocked 3 shots. Curry scored 10 points and claimed 11 rebounds.

Kaleb Moore scored 8 points with 4 rebounds and a pair of assists for Lakeside. JJ Hill grabbed 8 rebounds and had 4 assists.

Georgiana 77, McKenzie 46

Second-ranked Class 1A Georgiana rolled past visiting McKenzie on Saturday in an Area 3 contest.

Kaveon Miles and Jaden Stallworth finished with double-doubles for the Panthers (17-2, 5-0). Miles scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds with 4 steals. Stallworth scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds. Nasir Cheatham scored 17 points, claimed 9 rebounds and had 5 assists. Jacobie Morgan scored 10 points with 6 assists and 4 steals.

Percy Julian 90, Prattville 82

The Phoenix held off Prattville in the high-scoring affair on Saturday at home.

Ty Bryant exploded for 36 points, hitting 11-of-13 field-goal attempts including all three of his 3-point shots, to lead Prattville. Isaiah Bradley tossed in 19 points in the loss and Donavan Brown finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

GIRLS

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Williamson 44, Elberta 16

The Lions rolled to the Class 5A, Area 1 win at Elberta on Friday, led by three young players.

Freshman Jayla Lewis led Williamson with 17 points. Seventh-graders Nia’Ja Essex and Paydon Davis contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Gulf Shores 44, B.C. Rain 31

Class 5A No. 4 Gulf Shores outscored B.C. Rain 17-4 in the third quarter to pull away for a win.

The Dolphins improved to 21-6 overall and 4-0 in Area 1 play. Four Gulf Shores players sat out the second quarter due to foul trouble.

Junior Keyona Royal led the way with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Maggie Myers scored 10 points to go with 7 rebounds and 4 steals.

Kiarra McPherson scored 14 points for B.C. Rain.

Gulf Shores will host Elberta on Tuesday in another area matchup.

Daphne 63, Foley 57 (3OT)

Abby Johnson had 19 points, 5 steals, 4 assists and 4 rebounds as the Trojans outlasted rival Foley in three overtimes.

Class 7A No. 7 Daphne improved to 18-3 overall and 3-0 in Area 1 play. No. 10 Foley dropped to 12-7.

Kiera Watson had a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds, while La’Merrica Johnson added 15 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists. Addison Luker scored 13.

Jackson 62, Escambia County 40

Class 4A No. 4 Jackson pulled away from Escambia County on the road.

The Aggies (22-2, 3-0) got 23 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals from Tyra Caves.

Jazmine Jones followed with 12 points, 3 steals, 2 rebounds and an assist.

UMS-Wright 50, Bayside Academy 21

Ten different players scored for Class 4A No. 10 UMS-Wright.

Senior Noel Freeman led the way with a career-high 20 points. Misty Smith led Bayside with 10.

The Bulldogs improved to 19-6 overall and are now 4-0 in Area 1 play. They host Orange Beach on Tuesday. The Makos defeated St. Michael’s 36-27 on Friday to improve to 3-1 in the area, setting up a battle for first place.

McGill-Toolen 61, Robertsdale 12

Reagan Burroughs scored a game-high 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting for the Yellow Jackets.

McGill improved to 18-7 overall and 4-0 in Class 6A, Area 2 play. Burroughs also had 8 rebounds.

Albanie Dixon scored 12 points, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, and Jayde Dempsey added 10 points.

The Yellow Jackets host Baldwin County at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

BIRMINGHAM

Hewitt-Trussville 39, Chelsea 22

Class 7A fourth-ranked Hewitt-Trussville knocked off No. 8 Chelsea on Friday to improve to 20-5 overall and 4-0 in Area 6. The Huskies clinched home-court advantage for the area tournament in February with the win at home.

The Huskies relied on a strong defensive effort to drop the Hornets to 21-3 on the season. Hewitt held Chelsea to just 1 point in the opening period and led 18-7 at the half.

Jordan Hunter led Hewitt with 15 points. She had 3 assists in the win. Lauryn Holley scored 7 for the Huskies.

Haley Trotter led Chelsea (21-4) with 9 rebounds to go with her 8 points.

Hoover 68, Thompson 39

The fifth-ranked Class 7A Bucs rolled over Area 5 foe Thompson on the road on Friday to run their record to 18-6 on the year.

Hoover trailed 16-15 after one quarter, but jumped to a 30-23 halftime advantage and carried a 58-33 lead into the fourth period.

Kamryn Lee led Hoover with a career-high 17 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds and had 5 steals as the Bucs improved to 3-1 in area play. Khloe Ford scored 17 points for the Bucs. Ariana Peagler and Layla Cannon scored 10 points each in the win.

Homewood 59, Minor 41

Homewood improved to 20-4 overall and 3-1 in Class 6A, Area 9 play with the home win over No. 10 Minor on Friday.

Ava Robinson and Ellis McCool led the Patriots with 10 points each. McCool also had 7 rebounds for Homewood. Kayla Warren and Mira McCool grabbed 9 rebounds each. Warren had 3 steals and scored 7 points. Savannah McDonald scored 9 in the win.

Huffman 75, Gardendale 44

The sixth-ranked Vikings earned the Class 6A, Area 11 win on the road on Friday at Gardendale. Jamiria Jones poured in 28 points to lead Huffman (18-6).

Tamiria Jones scored 16 points and Breonna Robbins added 13 for Huffman, now 3-0 in area play.

Freshman Layla Berry led Gardendale with 17 points. Taylor Henry scored 8.

Huffman plays at Center Point on Tuesday.

Vestavia Hills 66, Tuscaloosa County 33

The third-ranked Rebels whipped Class 7A, Area 5 foe Tuscaloosa County at home on Friday. Vestavia Hills improved to 22-3 on the season.

Sarah Gordon led four Vestavia players in double figures with 14 points. Jill Gaylard scored 13 points and had 3 assists and 3 steals. Grayson Hudgens scored 12 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Mallory Cowan finished with 11 points and 3 assists.

Mountain Brook 61, Woodlawn 44

The Spartans picked up the Class 6A, Area 10 win on the road on Friday to improve to 16-8.

Maddie Walter led Mountain Brook with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Libby Geisler added 10 in the win.

Oak Mountain 46, Spain Park 32

The Eagles had three players finish in double figures in Friday’s win at Spain Park.

Raegan Whitaker registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. She also blocked 3 shots. Caroline Kester scored 14 points for Oak Mountain and Ella Holt added 11.

Oak Mountain is 6-17 on the season.

Pleasant Grove 84, John Carroll 44

The top-ranked Class 5A Spartans rolled over Area 9 foe John Carroll on Friday.

Tamya Smith led Pleasant Grove (15-7) with 17 points. Keyarria Stokes scored 14 and Omaya Nelson hit four 3-pointers and finished with 13 points.

McAdory 43, Brookwood 25

The Yellow Jackets got 19 points, 6 steals and 5 rebounds from Alicea Mosley on the way to the win over Brookwood. Zoe Lessears scored 9 points with 9 rebounds and 6 steals.

McAdory improved to 8-12 overall and 3-0 in Class 6A, Area 7 play.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Sand Rock 39, Cherokee County 34

Third-seeded Sand Rock slipped past No. 2 seed Cherokee County in the Cherokee County Tournament at Spring Garden on Friday.

Katelyn St.Clair led the Wildcats with 19 points. Peyton Johnson and Zoey Handy grabbed 8 rebounds each in the win. Macey Pruitt had 7 rebounds for Sand Rock (17-6).

STATEWIDE

Prattville Christian 69, Wilcox Central 34

The top-ranked Panthers rolled to the Class 4A, Area 5 win over Wilcox Central on Senior Night on Friday. Prattville Christian improved to 18-5 overall and 3-0 in area play.

Kayden Carr poured in 25 points to lead PCA. She also had 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Baylee Rogers scored 18 points with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Avery Rogers had 13 points and 8 rebounds. Ally Blankinchip hauled in 13 rebounds with 6 assists and Leah Cate Wilson grabbed 11 rebounds for the Panthers.

Prattville Christian plays another Area 5 game on Monday at Dallas County.

St. James 71, Alabama Christian 47

Class 3A No. 4 St. James rolled past Alabama Christian on the road on Friday to improve to 20-4 overall and 4-0 in Area 6 play.

Ava Card scored 27 points to lead the winners. Kaitlin Mitchell scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Natalie Barton scored 12 points to go with 9 steals, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. Morgan Lilly scored 11 points and had 4 rebounds. Katie Brightwell finished with 7 assists.

The Trojans play at Area 6 foe Montgomery Academy on Tuesday.

Georgiana 50, McKenzie 31

The Panthers improved to 9-8 with the home win on Saturday over McKenzie. Georgiana is 4-1 in Area 3 play with the win.

Lillie Boggan registered a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds. She also had 6 steals, 4 assists and a pair of blocked shots. Grace Bradley scored 12 points with 7 rebounds and 3 steals.

Chambers Academy 51, Lakeside 50

Chloe Helms scored a game-high 25 points for AISA No. 7 Lakeside in the narrow loss on Saturday. Helms also had 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

Sophie Seaborn had a triple-double for Lakeside with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals. Addysen Eriksen hauled down 20 rebounds and blocked 4 shots in the loss.

Lakeside closes out the regular season on Monday at Abbeville Christian.
