Basketball roundup: Baker knocks off No. 4 Mary Montgomery

Baker rallied late for a 54-48 Class 7A, Area 1 win on Friday, outscoring homestanding and fourth-ranked Mary G. Montgomery 18-8 in the final quarter to take the victory on the road.

The Vikings led 18-11 after one quarter, 32-25 at the half and 40-36 headed into the fourth.

Derrick Florence led Baker with 21 points. Mikey Johnson and Desmond Williams added 9 points apiece.

Zion Hunter led Mary Montgomery – 18-4 overall, 2-1 in Area 1 – with 21 points. John Lee Alum added 10.

Baker improved to 16-6 overall and 3-0 in area play.

BOYS

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

UMS-Wright 64, St. Michael 52

The Bulldogs jumped to a 18-3 first-quarter lead and a 30-14 advantage at the half on the way to the Class 4A, Area 1 win at home over St. Michael. UMS-Wright led 43-29 headed into the fourth period.

Sims Druhan led the winners with 15 points. He also had 6 rebounds. Finlay Lavelle scored 13 and Joe Lott had 10 points and 7 rebounds for UMS-Wright. Matthew McPhillips added 9 in the win.

Bryce Marston led the Cardinals with 9 points.

UMS-Wright is 2-1 in area play and will host Williamson on Tuesday.

McGill-Toolen 60, Spanish Fort 49

Eighth-ranked McGill-Toolen held homestanding Spanish Fort to 2 points in the second period on the way to the Class 6A, Area 2 win on Friday.

Ethan Stokes led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Down 23-14 after the first period, McGill rolled in the second period and extended the margin to 46-31 in the third quarter before the Toros ended the period with a 9-0 run to close within 46-40.

A technical foul early in the fourth resulted in a Stokes free throw, followed by one of his two dunks on the night to push McGill to a 49-40 lead.

Andrew Murchison scored 14 points for the winners on 6-of-7 shooting. He also had 7 rebounds. Jack Murphy scored 13 for the Yellow Jackets.

Jacob Black scored 30 for Spanish Fort, hitting seven 3-pointers. Josh Powell scored 14 for the Toros.

McGill-Toolen (16-5, 3-0) travels to Murphy on Thursday.

Williamson 73, B.C. Rain 31

Corien Coleman scored 25 points and Johnathan Johnson had 13 points and 10 rebounds in fifth-ranked Williamson’s Class 5A, Area 1 win. Williamson improved to 16-5 overall and 3-0 in area play.

Silas Evans had 9 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.

Cottage Hill 72, Williamson 65

The Class 3A No. 6 Warriors pushed their season record to 14-7 with the win at home on Saturday.

Clay Scofield poured in 23 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 5 assists and 4 steals. Shadrick Toodle pitched in 18 points to go with 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Kaden Nguyen scored 16 points with 4 steals.

Cottage Hill will host Davidson at 3 p.m. on Monday.

Clarke County 57, Chickasaw 43

The Bulldogs outscored the Chieftains 35-17 in the second half of the Class 3A, Area 1 game.

Chickasaw fell to 14-6, 3-1 in the area and hosts Washington County on Tuesday.

Vigor 70, LeFlore 68

Brandon Purifoy made a layup at the buzzer for Class 5A No. 7 Vigor (17-5). Purifoy also hit two free throws late to tie the game.

Terrell Johnson led the Wolves with 34 points.

“LeFlore played very tough,” Vigor coach Jairus Jackson said. “My guys responded and persevered through the battle.”

Fairhope 70, Foley 45

McRae Taul had 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Pirates opened 7A, Area 1 play with a win.

Sanders Daniell added 14 points and 12 rebounds and Jaden Champion had 10.

Theodore 50, Saraland 41

Houston Cunningham went 8-for-8 from the free throw line and finished with 18 points to lead the surging Bobcats. Theodore is 13-10 overall. JJ Bush added 13 points in the Class 6A, Area 1 game.

Theodore will play at Spanish Fort on Tuesday night.

Jackson 67, McIntosh 65

The Aggies, ranked seventh in Class 4A, slipped past McIntosh at home on Saturday to improve to 17-2 on the season.

Micah Caster led Jackson with 22 points. William Joseph Taylor scored 13 with Landon Duckworth and Keeyun Chapman adding 11 points each.

On Friday, Jackson whipped Satsuma 87-41 as Caster scored 31 points and surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for his career.

Rod Hamilton Jr. followed with 19 points and Duckworth and Chapman each had 10.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Buckhorn 68, Mae Jemison 27

The top-ranked Class 6A Bucks ran their record to 18-5 overall and 4-0 in Area 16 with the home win on Friday. Buckhorn led 18-8 after one quarter, 39-15 at the half and 56-21 headed into the fourth period.

Josh Wilkerson led Buckhorn with 16 points. Caleb Holt added 11 in the win.

The Bucks are scheduled to host Spain Park on Monday at 6 p.m. in the 256-205 Challenge.

Huntsville 85, Sparkman 54

The top-ranked Class 7A Panthers picked up their 20th straight win in the Area 7 contest on Friday. Huntsville now has won 29 in a row at home.

Five Panthers scored in double figures, led by senior Merick McCartney and junior Josh Bowman with 14 points apiece – both coming off the bench. Huntsville’s bench contributed 37 points in the win.

Caleb Harrison and Eli Stapler scored 11 points each and Simon Walker added 10 for Huntsville.

Huntsville (23-1, 3-0) hit 51 percent from the floor, connecting on 13-of-28 3-point attempts. Sparkman (6-16, 0-3) made 43 percent of its shots, 5-of-13 from behind the 3-point arc.

The Panthers led 17-13 after one quarter before exploding for 32 points in the second to lead 49-28 at the break. Huntsville led 75-44 headed into the final period, which was played with a running clock.

Orlandis Beale led Sparkman with 17 points.

Huntsville, ranked No. 12 in the nation by MaxPreps, will host Pinson Valley on Wednesday in the 256-205 Challenge.

Austin 79, Florence 55

The third-ranked Class 7A Black Bears rolled past Area 8 foe Florence on the road on Saturday to improve to 20-4 on the season and 2-0 in area play. Austin led 16-12 after one quarter and pulled away with a 25-16 second quarter to lead 57-39 at the break. Austin was up 57-39 headed into the final quarter.

Jordan Johnson led the winners with 23 points, 11 in the second quarter. Isaiah Fuller, Jaxon Potter and Caiden Ricks scored 10 points apiece for Austin.

Alleick Shipley led Florence with 19 points – with five 3-pointers, three in the fourth period. Jayshod Pearson scored 10 for the Falcons.

BIRMINGHAM

Mountain Brook 42, Shades Valley 35

The fourth-ranked Spartans improved to 16-6 and 2-0 in Class 6A, Area 10 with the home win over Shades Valley on Saturday.

Ty Davis led Mountain Brook with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Jack Bakken scored 10 points and had 5 rebounds.

Fairfield 70, John Carroll 52

Top-ranked Fairfield ran its season record to 21-2 and its Class 5A, Area 9 mark to 4-0 with the win at John Carroll on Saturday.

DeMarcus Williams led the Tigers with 14 points in the win. He also claimed 4 rebounds and had 4 assists. Corve Taylor scored 10 points and had 7 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

Bessemer Academy 63, Lee-Scott 61

Second-ranked Bessemer Academy nipped No. 1 Lee-Scott at home on Saturday.

Jordan Jeter led Bessemer Academy with 15 points. Johnathan Winston scored 12 points and claimed 6 rebounds while Tyseon Smith had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

On Friday, Bessemer Academy beat Clarke Prep 51-31 in a region game at Grove Hill. Kane Burns led the Rebels with 9 points. Jeran Jones had 7 rebounds to go with his 7 points. Joshua Thompson also had 7 points.

Spain Park 32, Hewitt-Trussville 29

The Jaguars slipped past Hewitt-Trussville on the road on Saturday in a Class 7A, Area 6 game.

TJ Lamar led Spain Park with 9 points.

The Jaguars (11-12) are scheduled to host Indian Springs on Tuesday and Oak Mountain in another area contest on Friday.

Hewitt-Trussville will host Chelsea for an area game on Friday.

JERRY BARTLEY INVITATIONAL

Midfield 68, Fultondale 65

The Patriots, ranked third in Class 3A, beat No. 4 Class 4A Fultondale on Saturday in the Jerry Bartley Invitational at Tarrant High School.

Brandon Riddle led Midfield with 16 points. He also had 8 rebounds. Armonie Franklin scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds with 5 assists. Dujuan McKinney also scored 14 points and had 3 assists. Aaron Adams-Martin scored 13 points and finished with 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

Midfield is 13-7 on the year while Fultondale dropped to 12-7.

McAdory 62, Baker 55

The Class 6A Yellow Jackets knocked off 7A Baker on Saturday in the Jerry Bartley Invitational at Tarrant High School. McAdory is 11-8 on the season while Baker is 16-7.

Tristan Gilmore poured in 30 points and hauled down 12 rebounds for McAdory.

STATEWIDE

Georgiana 91, Greenville 62

The second-ranked Class 1A Panthers rolled past 5A Greenville at home on Saturday, running their record to 15-2 on the year.

Six Georgiana players finished in double figures in the rout, led by Noah Nelson’s 20 points. Kaveon Miles scored 17 points with 8 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocked shots. Jacobie Morgan scored 16 with 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Nasir Cheatham scored 15 points and had 7 assists. Jaden Stallworth had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Marques Payton added 10 in the win.

On Friday, Georgiana beat 3A Straughn 60-54 on the road.

Nelson led the winners with 13 points. Cheatham scored 11 and Quan Scott added 10.

Montgomery Academy 57, St. James 38

Montgomery Academy picked up the Class 3A, Area 6 win on Friday at St. James. The Eagles improved to 16-6 overall and 2-0 in the area.

DJ Vinson tossed in 23 points with 14 rebounds and 4 steals for the winners. Skyler Stovall scored 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds with 7 assists and 3 steals. Seth Edwards scored 10 points with 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Brewer Welch had 7 assists and 5 steals for the Eagles.

MA will travel to Alabama Christian on Tuesday for another area game.

Valiant Cross 65, Southern Prep 36

Deshawn Hall scored 27 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked 4 shots in the win on Friday.

Valiant Cross, ranked No. 9 in the AISA, improved to 15-4 on the season.

Prattville Christian 66, Dallas County 32

Cade Segars scored 32 points, hitting 10 3-point attempts, in the rout of Dallas County at home in a 4A, Area 5 game on Saturday. Segars also grabbed 5 rebounds in the win.

Brady Roberson scored 14 points with 6 rebounds and 5 assists for PCA (11-11, 2-0). PJ Evans claimed 7 rebounds and had 5 assists to go with his 6 points. Justin Chapman and Lathan Rybarczyk finished with 8 rebounds apiece.

PCA will host Booker T. Washington Magnet in another area game on Tuesday.

GIRLS

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Lift for Life Academy (Mo.) 65, Lee-Huntsville 62

The Lift for Life Academy earned a narrow win over Lee-Huntsville on Saturday in the St. Louis Soulard MLK Classic. The St. Louis squad improved to 14-2 on the season while Lee fell to 14-10.

Lee rallied from a 38-25 halftime deficit to the second-ranked team in Missouri. The Generals outscored Lift for Life 19-10 in the third quarter and 18-17 in the fourth, but couldn’t overcome the Hawks’ lead.

Limaya Batimba scored 25 points and claimed 12 rebounds for Lee. Londan Harris scored 15 in the loss and Jayla Turner added 13.

Lee will play Hewitt-Trussville on Monday in Hoover.

Bob Jones 48, Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 27

The top-ranked Patriots rolled past Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa on Saturday to improve to 21-3 on the season.

Janiyah Bone led Bob Jones with 11 points and 6 rebounds. Alana Obianozie scored 11 for the Patriots and Zamyra Goode added 10.

On Friday, Obianozie scored on an offensive rebound put-back with less than 30 seconds left to lift No. 1 Bob Jones past Class 7A, Area 8 foe James Clemens 32-31 at home on Friday.

Trailing by a point, coach Jazmine Powers Carr called timeout to set up a final shot. Janiyah Bone took an open 3-pointer that went in-and-out, but Obianozie was there for the rebound to get the win.

Obianozie, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, led the Patriots – 2-0 in area play – with 14 points and 5 rebounds.

Deyon Smith led James Clemens with 10 points. Jazmin Grigsby scored 8 and grabbed 12 rebounds. Kimory Porter finished with 7 rebounds.

The Jets are 14-7 overall, 1-1 in area play.

Hazel Green 66, Immaculate Conception (NJ) 48

The No. 1 Class 6A Trojans rallied in the third period to pull ahead of Immaculate Conception of Montclair, N.J., and put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter in the St. James MLK Classic in Washington, D.C., on Saturday. The Lions led Hazel Green 15-13 after one period and 30-27 at the half. The Trojans pulled ahead 48-41 headed into the final quarter.

Hazel Green (21-4) was scheduled to play Sage Hill of Newport Beach, Calif., on Monday, but due to possible weather problems in North Alabama, team officials were forced to cancel that game to return home.

Leah Brooks led Hazel Green with 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Amiya Redus scored 15 and had 6 rebounds. Kristen Johnson scored 13 points. Sydney Steward scored 12 points and dished out 4 assists with 7 rebounds.

Mia Lewis led the Lions (10-3) with 11 points.

Sparkman 54, Huntsville 17

Second-ranked Sparkman rolled to a Class 7A, Area 7 win at Huntsville on Friday. The Senators jumped to a 15-3 first-quarter lead and were not threatened the rest of the way.

Nicholls State signee Jamya Griffin led Sparkman with 16 points. Sophomores Hanna Horton scored 13 and Elise McClain finished with 12.

The Senators, 15-7 overall and 3-0 in area play, will host Buckhorn on Tuesday.

Buckhorn 79, Mae Jemison 40

The Bucks rolled to a 28-9 first-quarter lead over Class 6A, Area 16 foe Mae Jemison on the way to the rout at home on Friday. Buckhorn was up 47-15 at the half and 66-32 after three quarters.

Junior Kayla Childress led the winners with 16 points, including three 3-pointers. Gabby Cowen scored 14, also with three 3-point buckets. Sophomore Jasmine Montague scored 12 – 11 in the first half. Senior Leah Cole scored 10 with two 3-pointers.

Jasmine Erwin led Mae Jemison with 18 points, 14 in the second half with 10 in the third period. Minyarta Bland added 6 points.

Buckhorn improved to 10-10 on the year, 1-3 in area play. The Jaguars are 3-9, 0-4.

St. John Paul II 49, West Limestone 47

Rhyan Holloway led the Falcons with 17 points and 8 rebounds in their road win over West Limestone in Lester on Friday in a Class 4A, Area 15 game. St. John Paul II is 7-13 overall and 4-1 in area play.

Elizabeth Rohling scored 7 points and had 5 rebounds in the win. Hope Harrell scored 8 for SJP2.

Sand Rock 51, Gaston 15

Eighth-ranked Sand Rock rolled to the Class 2A, Area 12 win on the road on Friday to improve to 16-6 on the season.

Katelyn St.Clair scored 18 points and had 4 steals in the win. Brylaina Holcomb scored 9 for Sand Rock.

The Wildcats host Coosa Christian on Tuesday.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

MS/AL CHALLENGE

UMS-Wright 31, Moss Point 26

Junior Ansleigh Ishee led the Bulldogs (18-6) past Moss Point on Saturday in the MS/AL Challenge at Gulf Shores High School. Ishee scored 12 points for UMS-Wright.

“It was a very strong win for us today, less than 24 hours after that battle we had with St. Michael last night,” UMS-Wright coach Terry Canova said.

On Friday, Class 4A No. 10 UMS-Wright edged St. Michael 41-39 in a key Area 1 game.

Noel Freeman led the Bulldogs (17-6) with 14 points. Ishee followed with 12.

Samantha Kokoszka led the Cardinals with 22.

“This is my third time playing St. Michael over the past two seasons, and it’s so hard to score against them,” Canova said. “Coach (David) Offerle’s defenses really make you work for every basket. We had a couple chances to break the game open, but our decision making wasn’t great at times. We are still learning when to be aggressive and when to pump the breaks. Regardless, winning is hard, and I’m proud of our girls for finding a way to win.”

McGill-Toolen 31, Biloxi 29

McGill-Toolen’s Makayla Johnson cut to the basket for layups twice late in the game to lift the Yellow Jackets to a 2- and then 4-point leads. The Yellow Jackets trailed by 3 at the half in the MS/AL Challenge at Gulf Shores High School on Saturday and by as many as 9 in the third quarter before defensive pressure got McGill back in the game. The Jackets got 14 steals on the night – most in the second half – with Johnson claiming 6, Anna McCarron and Bailee Smith getting 4 apiece.

Reagan Burroughs and Albanie Dixon claimed 7 rebounds each. Jayde Dempsey went 6-of-8 from the foul line in the win, including game-tying shots.

Biloxi dropped to 19-3 on the season with 6-3 freshman Zaniya Johnson scored 18 points and 8 rebounds.

McGill is 16-7 on the season and will play at Murphy on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

On Friday, McGill-Toolen topped Spanish Fort 56-39 on the road in a Class 6A, Area 2 contest. Dempsey led the Yellow Jackets, 3-0 in area play, with 15 points, hitting 6-of-10 of her field-goal attempts.

Burroughs scored 14 for McGill and Johnson added 11.

Brooke Bourdeau led the Toros with 14 points.

Gulf Shores 45, Pascagoula 42

The fourth-ranked Class 5A Dolphins slipped past Pascagoula in the MS/AL Challenge at Gulf Shores on Saturday. Junior Keyona Royal, starting at point guard for the injured Maya Griffin, scored 11 points – hitting 9-of-11 from the foul line – and grabbed 7 rebounds.

Seniors Alyssa Thompson and Maggie Myers scored 11 points each for Gulf Shores (20-5). Myers hit three 3-pointers in the win.

The Dolphins travel to West Florida on Monday to play Pine Forest of Pensacola.

On Friday, Gulf Shores ripped Elberta 81-12 in a 5A, Area 1 game at Elberta. The Dolphins roared to a 28-0 first-quarter lead and were up 52-3 at the half. Gulf Shores scored 71 of its 81 points off 58 Elberta turnovers.

Sophomore Kate Cimino scored 17 to lead the winners. Royal scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Thompson had 12 points and 5 steals.

Williamson 44, B.C. Rain 32 (2OT)

The Lions edged B.C. Rain in two overtimes at home on Friday.

Seventh-grader Paydon Davis led Williamson with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Jarhiya Davis finished with 9 rebounds in the win.

Mikeria Laland led B.C. Rain with 13 points. Kiara McPherson scored 10 in the loss.

Jackson 40, McIntosh 14

Fourth-ranked Class 4A Jackson rolled past McIntosh in a home game on Saturday to improve to 20-2 on the year.

Jazmine Jones led the winners with 8 points. She also had 3 rebounds.

Jackson plays at Citronelle on Monday.

On Friday, Jackson whipped Satsuma 62-10 in an Area 2 game at home. Tyra Caves had 18 points, 3 assists and 2 steals as the fourth-ranked Class 4A Aggies improved to 18-2.

Davidson 54, Alma Bryant 36

Jenice Adjessom scored 26 points as Class 7A No. 6 Davidson won at home.

Zydia Johnson scored 10 for the Warriors (18-5, 3-0 Area 1).

Alma Bryant’s Madi-Marie Grayson scored 15 and Mari-Margret Grayson had 11.

BIRMINGHAM

Hoover 57, Mount Paran Christian 48

The Bucs handed Mount Paran Christian of Kennesaw, Ga., just its second loss in 16 games on Saturday in the 8th annual J4 Sports MLK Classic in Douglasville, Ga.

Hoover, 16-5 and ranked fifth in Class 7A, led 14-11 after one quarter and 30-25 at the half. The Bucs were up 42-35 headed into the final period.

Kaitlyn Gipson led the winners with 14 points. Ariana Peagler scored 13 and Layla Cannon finished with 11 for Hoover.

Homewood 38, Center Point 36

Homewood moved to 19-4 on the season with a pair of wins on Saturday.

In the win over Center Point, Kam Coleman notched a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kardyn Spears added 8 for Homewood.

The Patriots also picked up a 59-55 win over Class 6A No. 6 Parker to move to 2-1 in Area 9 play.

Ellis McCool and Savannah McDonald had double-double performances in the win. McCool finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. McDonald scored 13 points and also had 11 boards.

Kayla Warren scored 11 points and had 3 rebounds for the Patriots. Ava Robinson added 8 points.

Minor 60, Jackson-Olin 30

Minor improved to 15-8 on the year with the home win on Saturday in a Class 6A, Area 9 game.

Kaelyn Gowdy led the Tigers with 22 points, thanks to a career-high six 3-pointers. Bri Adams scored 12 in the win and Aryn Clark added 8.

Ava Cameron led Minor with 8 rebounds and Quantrese Washington grabbed 6.

Vestavia Hills 65, Thompson 34

The third-ranked Rebels whipped Thompson on Saturday at home in a Class 7A, Area 5 game.

Sarah Gordon led Vestavia Hills (21-3) with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Jill Gaylard scored 13 points and had 5 steals in the win. Grayson Hudgens added 10 points with 6 rebounds.

Clay-Chalkville 48, Huffman 43

The Cougars, ranked fourth in Class 6A, beat No. 7 Huffman at the Center Point MLK Classic on Saturday to improve to 19-2 on the season.

Kameron Sanders led Clay-Chalkville with 20 points. She also had 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Brooklyn Phillips scored 10 points and claimed 6 rebounds. Kamoriah Gaines finished with 9 points and 8 rebounds.

STATEWIDE

Prattville Christian 79, Dallas County 15

The top-ranked Class 4A Panthers rolled past Dallas County in an Area 5 game at home on Saturday. Kayden Carr led the winners with 21 points. She also grabbed 4 rebounds.

Avery Rogers and Reagan Houston scored 11 points each, with Rogers also handing out 4 assists. Ally Blankinchip had 7 assists and 7 steals for PCA.

Prattville Christian improved to 17-4 and 2-0 in the area. The Panthers play at 7A No. 5 Hoover on Monday at 5 p.m.

Greenville 48, Carroll-Ozark 42

The Tigers won the home Class 5A, Area 4 game on Friday.

Taliyah Carter led Carroll in the loss with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Zymirria Glanton scored 13 for the Eagles. Tyazia Newman grabbed 8 rebounds to go with her 7 points. Ryanna Harris also scored 7 points.

Georgiana 55, Greenville 35

Georgiana improved to 8-7 on the year with the win at home on Saturday.

Lillie Boggan registered a triple-double for the Panthers, scoring 21 points with 13 rebounds and 10 assists. She also had 3 steals. Nyeashia Thomas registered a double-double with 14 points and 21 rebounds. She also blocked 5 shots.

Grace Bradley added 10 for Georgiana.

Straughn 53, Georgiana 31

The Panthers lost at Straughn on Friday. Lillie Boggan led Georgiana with 19 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocked shots.

St. James 74, Providence Christian 29

Ava Card and Natalie Barton led Class 3A No. 5 St. James to the rout on Saturday. Card poured in 29 points and Barton had 26 in the home win. Kaitlin Mitchell scored 9 for the Trojans.

St. James (18-4) will host Trinity in an Area 6 contest on Thursday.
