Basketball roundup: Auburn slips past Jackson to claim title

Auburn slipped past Jackson 52-49 to claim the championship of the William Mitchell Memorial Tournament at UMS-Wright in Mobile on Saturday.

The Class 7A Tigers improved to 15-3 on the season while 4A Jackson fell to 10-2.

Auburn jumped to a 13-7 first-quarter lead before the Aggies came back to lead 23-19 at the half. The Tigers outscored Jackson 20-15 in the third to take a 39-38 advantage into the final period.

Griffin McLean and Tabari Allen led Auburn with 12 points apiece. Tournament MVP Bradley Pearson, a senior guard, added 8 for the Tigers.

Micah Caster led Jackson with 12 points in the loss.

Auburn travels to Dothan on Tuesday while Jackson hosts Monroe County.

In other Mitchell Memorial games on Saturday:

Mobile Christian 70, Stanhope Elmore 48

The Leopards closed out the tournament with the runaway win over Stanhope Elmore. The winners led 13-6 after one quarter, 31-14 at the half and 49-35 headed into the final period.

Austin Delmore tossed in 19 points to lead the winners. Nicholaus Allen scored 13 in the win.

Kaleb Sanders scored 12 to lead the Mustangs.

Mobile Christian opens Class 3A, Area 1 play at home against Cottage Hill. Stanhope Elmore hosts the Elmore County Tournament next week and will play Elmore County on Friday.

Baldwin County 59, Gulf Shores 52

Baldwin County jumped to a 34-18 halftime lead before the Dolphins trimmed the margin to 44-39 headed into the fourth quarter.

Jay Bolar led the winners with 28 points.

Lundon McLeod led Gulf Shores with 21 points.

Baldwin County will host St. Michael on Tuesday while Gulf Shores plays at UMS-Wright on Wednesday.

Fairhope 53, UMS-Wright 32

The Pirates rolled to a 32-13 halftime lead and coasted past UMS-Wright on the final day of the tournament.

Broder Elliason poured in 23 points to lead Fairhope. McRae Taul added 10 in the win.

Sims Druhan had 6 points for UMS-Wright.

Fairhope travels to Spanish Fort on Tuesday. UMS-Wright hosts Gulf Shores on Wednesday.

BIG ORANGE CLASSIC

Hoover 68, Montgomery Bell Academy (Tenn.) 25

The second-ranked Class 7A Bucs raced to a 26-3 first-quarter lead on the way to the rout at home to win the Big Orange Classic over Montgomery Bell of Nashville.

Hoover (17-2) led 43-16 at the half and 59-19 after three quarters.

Salim London tossed in 16 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 4 assists to lead the defending state champion Bucs. DeWayne Brown scored 12 points and claimed 8 rebounds and blocked 4 shots.

Hoover opens Area 5 play on Friday, hosting Thompson.

METRO TOURNAMENT

Baker 68, Hartselle 56

The Hornets, ranked ninth in Class 7A, held 6A Hartselle to just 4 points in the final quarter on the way to the win at Homewood High School in the Metro Tournament.

Baker led 41-38 at the half and 57-52 headed into the final period.

Dashawn Thomas led four players in double figures for the winners, tossing in 18 points. He had four 3-pointers for the Hornets. Derrick Florence scored 12 in the win and Andersen Madyun had 11. Desmond Williams scored 10 for Baker.

Rylan Smothers led Hartselle with 21 points. He finished with three 3-point buckets. Ty Odom scored 18, also with three 3-pointers. Markus Tapscott scored 9.
