Basketball roundup: Auburn, Jackson to meet in Mitchell Memorial final

Auburn topped Fairhope 61-45 and Jackson beat host UMS-Wright 63-53 in the semifinals of the William Mitchell Memorial tournament on Friday. The Tigers and Aggies will meet in the finals at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The Tigers jumped to a 29-19 halftime lead after holding a 15-13 edge after one period. Auburn pushed its lead to 44-31 after three quarters.

Adam Gonia led Auburn with 17 points, including five 3-pointers. Antwane Daniels scored 12 for the Tigers.

Jackson Gulley led the Pirates with 19 points.

Jackson rallied from a 28-22 halftime deficit to take control in the third quarter. The Aggies outscored UMS-Wright 25-15 in the third period to lead 47-43 headed into the final quarter.

Micah Caster scored 17 of his 21 points in the third period. Keeyun Chapman scored 10 in the win.

Siims Druhan led the Bulldogs with 17 points. Jack Blackerby added 9.

Gulf Shores 58, Stanhope Elmore 51 (OT)

Matt Siguiera led the Dolphins with 16 points and Ryann Barnes scored 12 in the win.

Anthony Davis scored 13 to lead Stanhope Elmore.

Baldwin County 68, Mobile Christian 64

The winners rallied from a 48-43 deficit in the fourth period to knock off Mobile Christian. Mobile Christian led 19-13 after one period and 34-28 at the half.

Jackson Hughes hit five 3-point buckets in the fourth qurater and finished with 17 points for the Tigers. Jay Bolar added 16 points in the win.

Michael Moore led the Leopards with 20 points.

On Saturday, Stanhope Elmore will play Mobile Christian at 11 a.m. Baldwin County meets Gulf Shores at 12:30 p.m., followed by UMS-Wright vs. Fairhope at 2:30.

GULF COAST HOLIDAY CLASSIC

McGill-Toolen 70, Booker T. Washington (Fla.) 37

McGill-Toolen rolled past Booker T. Washington of Pensacola on Friday in the second round of the Gulf Coast Holiday Classic at Spring Hill College in Mobile.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 12-5 on the year and will play Spanish Fort at 1:30 p.m. on the final day of the event on Saturday.

McGill-Toolen hit 51 percent of its shots on the day and was 9-of-10 from the foul line.

Jack Murphy poured in 36 points, including 10 3-pointers, to lead the Yellow Jackets. Murphy had 13 first-half points before hitting five of his long-range shots in the third period. He had 17 points in the quarter.

McGill led 30-16 at the half and 59-31 headed into the fourth quarter.

Grayson Brower scored 8 of his 11 points in the third quarter. Andrew Murchison scored 8 points for McGill-Toolen.

Alex Jasquith led the Wildcats with 13 points. Booker T. Washington plays Saraland on Saturday.

Cottage Hill 69, Daphne 54

The Class 3A fourth-ranked Warriors picked up the second-round Classic win at Spring Hill College in Mobile on Friday over 7A Daphne to improve to 11-6 on the season.

Clay Scofield led Cottage Hill with 21 points. He finished with 4 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 steals. Shadrick Toodle scored 16 points with 6 steals and 4 assists. Shadarius Toodle added 14 points with 7 rebounds, 2 blocked shots and a pair of steals.

Cottage Hill plays Theodore on Saturday at noon.

RAIDER HOLIDAY CLASSIC

Fairview 67, Boaz 52

The Aggies won the tournament with the win over Boaz. Fairview improved to 7-10 on the year after Blake Rickard tossed in 19 points.

Landrun Smith and Kobe Payne scored 14 points each in the win.

Decatur Heritage 47, Randolph 36

The Falcons rallied in the fourth period to earn third place in the Classic at Randolph School. Trailing 29-28 after three quarters, Decatur Heritage rolled to a 19-7 finish for the win.

Randolph had taken its third-period lead after trailing 23-19 at the half.

Brady Wilson led the winners with 17 points. He also had 7 rebounds. Nash Thomas scored 13 and grabbed 8 rebounds. Hayden Page scored 11 and had 6 boards.

Oakwood Adventist Academy 77, North Jackson 41

The Mustangs got back on the winning track after two narrow losses with the win over North Jackson. Oakwood led 23-7 after one quarter and 48-16 at the half.

Will Lewis led the winners with 16 points. Jayson McCoy scored 14 with four 3-pointers, Nathan Nesbitt had 11 and Aeric Reid and Jadon Williams had 10 apiece.

SUPREME COURTS CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT

Jacksonville 61, Prattville Christian 44

Two-time defending Class 4A state champion Jacksonville knocked off Prattville Christian in the tournament at Guntersville.

Cade Segars led PCA with 24 points and 5 rebounds. Brady Roberson scored 12 points and had 5 rebounds with 4 assists for the Panthers (8-10).

METRO TOURNAMENT

Hueytown 84, Hartselle 40

The Gophers picked up the win in the Homewood High School tournament with four players turning in double-figures performances.

Braylon Patton led the way for Hueytown with 25 points. Greenie Coleman scored 16 and Samuel Harris had 14, with four 3-pointers in the first half. Tyler Agee scored 10 points for Hueytown.

The Gophers jumped to a 28-16 first-quarter lead and pushed their advantage to 49-21 at the half. Hueytown carried a 71-33 margin into the fourth period.

Rylan Smothers led Hartselle with 11 points. Dawson Seal scored 9 for the Tigers, hitting three 3-pointers in the third quarter. Ty Odom added 8 points – all in the first half – with a pair of 3-pointers.

BIG ORANGE CLASSIC

Hoover 78, Escambia (Fla.) 49

The Bucs led 20-14 after one period and 38-30 at the half to top the Gators from Pensacola. Hoover led 65-41 headed into the final quarter in the game at Hoover.

The Bucs will play Montgomery Bell Academy of Nashville for the championship at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Salim London led Hoover (16-2) with 17 points. DeWayne Brown scored 14 and Jarett Fairley added 11. Jackson Sheffield scored 10 in the win. Elijah Thomas and Seneca Robinson scored 8 points apiece.

MARLIN CLASSIC

Montgomery Academy 69, Bartram Trail (Fla.) 64

The Class 3A No. 5 Eagles rallied from a 10-0 deficit to tie the Friday second-round game at 32 at the half and pulled ahead of the Jacksonville, Fla., school in the tournament at Arnold High in Panama City Beach with a 16-10 third period. Montgomery Academy improved to 12-4 on the season.

Skyler Stovall led Montgomery Academy with 23 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and a pair of blocked shots. DJ Vinson notched a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds with 4 blocks in the win. Seth Edwards scored 14 with 6 rebounds. Brewer Welch contributed 7 assists.

On Thursday, MA lost 66-53 to Lipscomb Academy of Nashville. Stovall led the Eagles with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Vinson had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Montgomery Academy plays its final round game at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Lakeside 39, Trinity Christian 32 (OT)

The Chiefs fell behind 13-7 at the half before rallying in the final two periods to knot the score at 31-all at the end of regulation.

Rhodes Bennett led the winners with 12 points and 13 rebounds. He also blocked 3 shots. James Curry scored 10 points and had 3 steals. Kaleb Moore scored 9 points and had 5 rebounds with 3 steals. JJ Hill grabbed 9 rebounds.

RAIDER HOLIDAY CLASSIC

Fort Payne 62, Woodville 32

The Class 6A Wildcats rolled past 1A Woodville on Friday. Fort Payne led 21-4 after one quarter and 35-11 at the half.

Avery Chadwick and Allie Wells led Fort Payne with 11 points each. Zimri Craig added 10 in the win.

Lannah Beard scored 10 points to lead Woodville. Kellie Brown had 7 points for the Panthers.

Sylvania 59, Whitesburg Christian 17

The Rams raced to a 21-4 first-quarter lead and coasted past Whitesburg Christian on Friday.

Meredith Jackson tossed in 18 points for Sylvania with a pair of 3-pointers. Avery Jenkins scored 9 points and Jaidyn Ashley added 7.

Emma Grace Maher led Whitesburg with 6 points on two 3-point buckets.

BALLN PREP HOLIDAY INVITATIONAL

Hoover 63, Rogers (Ohio) 47

The Class 7A No. 5 Bucs closed out the tournament with the win over Rogers of Toledo on Friday.

Sophomore Khloe Ford led Hoover with 19 points. Junior Kaitlyn Gipson and senior Ariana Peagler scored 10 points each for the Bucs (12-4).

Hoover will host Thompson on Jan. 5.

Sparkman 47, Prattville Christian 36

The Class 7A second-ranked Senators improved to 12-6 with the win over top-ranked Class 4A Prattville Christian on Friday.

Abethany James led Sparkman with 14 points.

Jenna McClendon scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Prattville Christian, which had beaten the third-ranked teams in Class 5A and 6A in the past two days. Kayden Carr scored 12 points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists and Avery Rogers added 11 for the Panthers (13-4).

Sparkman travels to New Orleans on Jan. 4 to play Ponchatoula, La., in the Sugar Bowl Classic. Prattville Christian hosts Montgomery Catholic on Jan. 5.

Priceville 56, Rogers 44

The fifth-ranked Class 4A Bulldogs improved to 10-7 on the year with the win on Thursday at Lauderdale County High in Rogersvlle.

Priceville led 12-3 after one quarter and 28-19 at the half. The Bulldogs carried a 43-27 edge into the final quarter.

Abby Langlois had a double-double in the win, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Amberleigh Dean scored a career-high 13 points for Priceville. Lillyan Bloodworth had 4 assists and 4 rebounds.

Halee Garner led Rogers with 20 points.

WEST MORGAN HOLIDAY CLASSIC

Russellville 46, Danville 34

Adily Alberti led Danville with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals in the loss. Maddie Sherrill grabbed 6 rebounds and had 3 steals.

FALCON CHRISTMAS CLASSIC

Decatur Heritage 62, St. James 57

The third-ranked Class 2A Eagles handed 3A No. 5 St. James its fourth loss in 19 games thus far on the final day of the Classic at St. John Paul II Catholic in Huntsville.

Ava Card led St. James with 21 points. KK Corley added 13 in the loss.
