Basketball roundup: AHSAA teams open season

Basketball season opened over the weekend for Alabama High School Athletic Association schools with several taking part in tip-off tournament play.

Here are highlights from some girls’ games reported to [email protected]:

UMS-Wright 53, LeFlore 22

Senior Noel Freeman played in the Class 4A volleyball state championship tournament on Thursday. The next day she helped the Bulldogs defeat LeFlore in the basketball home opener.

Freeman led all scorers with 16 points. She also grabbed 6 rebounds, had 8 steals, 2 blocks and 5 pass deflections.

Daphne 60, Saraland 41

The Trojans had three players in double figures in the Thursday opening-day win.

La’Merrica Johnson scored 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Addison Luker scored 13 with a pair of assists and Abby Johnson had 12 points, 4 steals and 4 assists for the winners. Kiera Watson claimed 7 rebounds and scored 9 points.

Elle Roberts led Saraland with 14 points.

Vestavia Hills 62, Blount 30

The Rebels improved to 3-0 with the win at Gulf Shores Tip-Off Tournament on Friday. Sarah Gordon led Vestavia Hills with 15 points and Jilly Gaylard scored 14.

Gordon and Marley Cowen, who scored 10, had 7 rebounds each.

Sparkman 55, Pleasant Grove 47

The Senators opened the season in the Hazel Green Tip Off Tournament with the win over the defending Class 5A state champions.

Hannah Horton led all scorers with 18 points. She also grabbed 5 rebounds and had 3 steals for Sparkman.

Pleasant Grove’s Tamya Smith, a University of Memphis commitment, scored 17 points and Keyarria Stokes had 10.

Lee-Huntsville 58, Brewbaker Tech 51

Limaya Batimba recorded her third double-double in three games to open the season in the win. The junior scored 16 points and claimed 11 rebounds for the Generals.

Lee led 39-18 at the half and 51-33 headed into the fourth quarter.

Jayla Turner and Khaleyeah Jones had 10 points each for 2-1 Lee.
