Baseball playoffs: 4A No. 3 Corner sweeps Madison County, more Thursday first round scores
Strong pitching and a potent offense helped Class 4A third-ranked Corner sweep a double-header from Madison County during the first round of AHSAA high school baseball playoffs on Thursday.
Corner won the first game 10-0 in five innings and downed the Tigers 9-1 in the second game to complete the sweep.
Corner (25-6) plays the winner of White Plains at Etowah during next week’s second round.
Corner exploded for 27 hits in the double-header, including 5 home runs with 11 total extra-base hits. Eli Cannon and Brendan Conner each homered twice while Brodie Dunlap also hit a blast.
Pitching was just as dominant, the Yellow Jackets allowing 5 hits while striking out 19 with 5 walks in the two games.
Corner got all the runs it needed in the first inning of game 2, Dunlap delivering a 3-run homer after Cannon and Conner singled with one out in the top of the inning.
The Yellow Jackets scored 3 runs in each the fifth and sixth innings for the final tally.
Cannon held the Tigers to a lone run, allowing 3 hits and striking out 12.
Cannon, Conner, Dunlap, Cole Rasbury, Max Hill and Daven Lee each had 2 hits in the game, Dunlap’s 3 RBIs leading the way. Rasbury and Hill added doubles.
Corner also started fast in game 1, Cannon belting a 2-run homer and Hill adding an RBI-single for a 3-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets added 4 runs in the second and 3 in the fourth to close out the five-inning mercy rule.
Dunlap pitched the win, striking out 7 and allowing 2 hits in five innings.
Conner was 3-for-3, including a solo home run and double with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored while Cannon was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs. Hill was 2-for-2 with an RBI and run.
Sam Hill, Lee and Jace Boyd all had doubles in the game.
