Barry Moore floats Donald Trump for House speaker

Alabama Rep. Barry Moore on Wednesday said he is backing Donald Trump for House speaker, which would make the former president the first non-member of the chamber to lead the body should he accept the nomination and prevail.

“Trump is the leader of the Republican Party. Millions of Americans are cheering for him,” Moore told Punchbowl News reporter Mica Soellner.

But Trump suggested Wednesday he would decline a speaker run, according to the Hill.

“Lot of people have been calling me about Speaker, all I can say is we’ll do whatever is best for the country and for the Republican Party,” Trump told reporters, adding that he was prioritizing his 2024 presidential campaign.

“My focus is totally on that. If I can help them during the process, I’ll do it. But we have some great people in the Republican Party that could do a great job as speaker.”

Moore was among five Republican House members who floated the idea of Trump as speaker, a position that does not have to be held by a member. But the former president would be the first non-member to be speaker if he was elected.

The Republican congressman from Enterprise said he would back Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, if he had to choose someone from within the chamber.

The other Republican members backing Trump for speaker were Reps. Troy Nehls and Ronny Johnson of Texas, Anna Paulina Luna and Greg Steube of Florida, Nehls told the Hill.

The speakership became vacant Tuesday when a group of eight Republican members joined every House Democrat to remove California Rep. Kevin McCarthy from the position.
