Barrage of gunfire in Birmingham neighborhood leaves 1 dead

A young man was killed when someone opened fire on him in a northern Birmingham neighborhood Thursday night.

Just before 9 p.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched to the 3100 block of 33rd Place North on a report of a person shot.

When officers got on the scene, they found multiple shell casings on the ground in the street, but did not find a victim, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

A short time later, the victim showed up at UAB Hospital. He had been driven there by a private vehicle. South Precinct officer then notified North Precinct officers.

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital just over an hour later.

Fitzgerald said investigators believe the victim was targeted.

“Based on the amount of shell casings on the ground, and how secluded this area is, we do believe this is targeted,’’ he said. “Detectives are investigating this as there may be multiple shooters.”

No arrests have been made.

The victim is the fifth person killed in Birmingham in the past six days, after the city went almost two weeks without a homicide.

So far this year, there have been 84 homicides in Birmingham. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and seven others have been rule justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 117 homicides, including the 84 in Birmingham.
