Barack Obama records campaign message, endorses Alabama congressional candidate Shomari Figures

Former President Barack Obama has joined other nationally known Democrats in an effort to boost the campaign of their party’s nominee in Alabama’s pivotal 2nd Congressional District, Shomari Figures of Mobile.

Obama recorded a message endorsing Figures, who worked in the Obama administration and in the Justice Department during the Biden administration.

Figures faces Republican Caroleene Dobson, a Montgomery attorney, in Tuesday’s election.

“Alabama, you’ve led the way in securing voting and civil rights for everyone in America, making journeys like mine possible,” Obama said. “Today, America needs you to lead the charge for change once again.

“By sending Shomari Figures to Congress, you’ll have someone committed to improving economic and healthcare outcomes for everyone.

“I know this because Shomari served in my administration, helping implement policies to make life better for all Americans,” Obama explained.

The message from the former president comes a day after U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-New York, came to Montgomery to campaign for Figures.

Jeffries’ trip to Montgomery followed a visit by U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas, who on Sunday participated in a round table at a Baptist church and then later met with students at Alabama State University.

A federal court redrew the 2nd District last year to favor Democratic candidates after a ruling that Alabama’s previous map diluted the influence of Black voters.

Republicans have held the seat since 2010. If Democrats could flip the seat it would help their efforts to erase the GOP’s 220-212 edge in the U.S. House.

“I am humbled and grateful to President Obama for his support, and for the incredible opportunity I had to work and learn from him and his Administration,” Figures said in a press release. “His humility, integrity, decency, and historic leadership continues to inspire millions of people around the world, and I am thankful he gave a kid from Mobile, Alabama the chance to play a small part in such a historic and productive chapter in America’s story.”
