Bankhead Tunnel in Mobile to close next week for electrical upgrades

The Bankhead Tunnel in Mobile will be closed next week, the Alabama Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

Starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, until the afternoon on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024, the tunnel will be closed as ALDOT installs a new generator in the tunnel, part of a larger project to upgrade the electrical system.

Drivers are asked to use alternative routes, including the Wallace Tunnel on Interstate 10 or the Africatown Bridge.

ALDOT says that they hope to complete the repairs in a timely manner and have the tunnel opened earlier than planned.

The Bankhead Tunnel opened in 1941. Once the generator is replaced, ALDOT will work to upgrade the lights inside the tunnel.
