Band of armed robbers targeting Hispanic victims in Birmingham; more than 30 robbed in October
A band of armed gunmen is targeting Hispanic victims for robbery throughout Birmingham.
More than 30 Hispanic victims have been targeted in October, with at least six people robbed in five different incidents Wednesday in less than four hours.
“It’s extremely alarming because we know this group is not going to stop until we stop them,’’ said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
“They’ve shown no signs that they’re going to stop.”
The spate of holdups began earlier this month.
The victims include families and workers at construction sites and other businesses.
No serious injuries have been reported, but Fitzgerald said it appears the holdups are well thought out, planned in advance.
They have taken place from one end of the city to another, and are not concentrated in one area.
“These are not crimes of opportunities,’’ he said.
Investigators believe the suspects in all of the holdups are working together.
No description is yet being released because sometimes the descriptions change. The method of the robberies, however, has not, Fitzgerald said.
Wednesday was a particularly tough day for police because the robberies were happening one after another across the city, beginning shortly after 2 p.m. and taking place until at least 6 p.m.
The concern for the situation could be heard on the police radio throughout Wednesday afternoon as officers responded to once robbery after another, and headed to areas with a large Hispanic presence in a proactive effort.
“Our detectives are working around the clock and our officers are being more vigilant in areas where we know we have a higher concentration of Hispanic families,’’ Fitzgerald said.
“It’s sad this group is targeting individuals they know are vulnerable,’’ he said.
Police are trying to get the word out to potential victims and even contractors and business owners who employee Hispanic workers.
“We want people to be vigilant and mindful,’’ Fitzgerald said.
The Birmingham Police Department has a number of Spanish speaking officers, including a robbery detective.
Fitzgerald said victims do not need to be afraid to speak up if they have been victimized or know something about the crimes.
“People do not ever have to be afraid to talk to the Birmingham Police Department,’’ he said.
“We’re worried for the safety of our Hispanic community,’’ Fitzgerald said.
“Anytime someone is willing to a bring a gun into any situation there’s always the fear this could end in violence. We’re trying our best to stop this before it escalates into someone being harmed.”
Anyone who has been a victim and has not reported it to the police, or anyone who has information, is asked to call robbery detectives at 205-254-1764.
