Baltimore Ravens retain former Auburn offensive lineman

The Baltimore Ravens signed nine players from their practice squad to reserve/future contracts on Monday, the day after the NFL team’s season ended in a 17-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.

The players finished the season on the Baltimore practice squad and included three with Alabama football roots – guard Tykeem Doss (Aliceville), guard Tashawn Manning (Auburn) and cornerback Christian Matthew (Samford).

A player signed to a reserve/future contract can be added to an NFL team’s roster when it expands from 53 to 90 players for the offseason on the first day of the NFL’s 2023 business year on March 13. The newly signed players become eligible to participate in offseason workouts, minicamps and OTAs as team members.

Only players who aren’t on NFL active rosters can sign reserve/future contracts.

Doss and Manning joined Baltimore as undrafted rookies in the offseason and signed with the practice squad after being released in August in the cutdown from the 90-player preseason roster to the 53-player regular-season roster.

Doss came from Southern Miss, and Manning came from Kentucky, where he played in 2022 after five seasons at Auburn.

Neither Doss nor Manning played in a regular-season game as rookies.

Matthew didn’t join Baltimore’s practice squad until Jan. 16 after the Chicago Bears’ season ended. Matthew started his second NFL season with 83 special-teams plays in four games with the Arizona Cardinals, who chose him in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Bears signed Matthew for their practice squad two days after he’d been waived by the Cardinals on Oct. 2. He got 14 more special-teams plays in two games with Chicago as a practice-squad elevation before the end of the regular season. With his contract up at season’s end, Matthew extended his season by joining the Ravens.
