Baldwin County sheriff’s deputy kills gun-wielding Foley man after traffic stop, fight, authorities say
A Baldwin County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a Foley resident Sunday after the man fought deputies and pulled out a gun on the Beach Express, authorities said Monday.
Logan Tyler Swanson, 24, was in a vehicle stopped by deputies around 4:43 p.m. Sunday on the Baldwin County Beach Express just north of Highway 90 in Robertsdale, said Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit Chairman and Bay Minette Police Chief Al Tolbert.
The major crimes unit is investigating the case, which will be turned over to the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office for review once complete.
During the traffic stop, a fight ensued between one of the occupants of the vehicle — later identified as Swanson — and two deputies.
During the struggle, Swanson allegedly ignored commands to stop fighting and comply with the deputies when he pulled out a gun, Tolbert said.
One of the deputies then shot Swanson, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deputies involved in the incident were not injured.
Both were placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure when law enforcement officers are involved in deadly incidents with suspects.
Further information will not be released until the major crimes unit completes the investigation, Tolbert said.
