Baker sets school record for points, downs Davidson

Josh Flowers accounted for three touchdowns to lead Baker over Davidson 66-28 Friday night at Clem Richardson Stadium on Homecoming night.

The Hornets set a school record for points scored in a game, breaking the previous record of 63.

After the game, both teams were involved in a brawl at midfield. Coaches and officers were able to break it up, but coaches were concerned that fines and ejections for next week’s key region games could be coming.

Flowers’ three first-half touchdowns put the Hornet’s up comfortably 38-7. He scored on runs of 3 and 57 yards and also connected with Kevin Beckham on a 38-yard score.

“Those guys up front on the offensive line allow me to make plays and get the ball out to our playmakers,” he said. “They are the ones that should be getting a lot of the credit.”

Roderick Taylor rushed for three touchdowns out of the Hornets backfield, scoring on runs of 4,18 and 20 yards. Taylor scored on three of his six carries.

“In my opinion, Rod is the best back in 7A,” Flowers said. “He runs hard, and it’s so difficult to bring him down on the first hit.”

Coastal Carolina commit DJ Butler rushed for 210 yards on 25 carries for Davidson, scoring on a 55-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Butler, the Warriors’ only substantial offensive threat on this night, had gains of 10, 11, 12, 16 and 28 yards. He added 119 yards in return yardage and caught three passes for 44 yards, including a 9-yard score.

“He’s a combination of speed and power,” Baker coach Steve Normand said. “Once he gets the edge and on the outside he’s gone.”

— Star of the game: Flowers, the Mississippi State commit, accounted for 358 total yards and 0 turnovers. “Protecting the ball, that’s the key,” he said.

— Play of the game: After the Warriors cut the lead to 24-7, Flowers connected with Kevin Beckham for a 38-yard score. Flowers had two receivers open on the deep ball, finding Beckham racing down the sidelines.

— Stat sheet: Hudson Spivey tossed three touchdown passes in the third quarter for the Warriors — Anthony Rabb (27), Demarcus George (13) and Butler (9). Spivey finished with 101 yards through the air. The Hornets scored two special teams touchdowns, a blocked punt and 50-yard kickoff return for a score.

“Special teams have been big for us all season,” Normand said. “It makes a difference when you are doing the right thing in all three phases of the game.”

— By the numbers: (5) consecutive victories for the Hornets over Davidson, all by double digits. (20) region victories for Baker coach Steve Normand in his fifth season. (3) 30-plus points this season the Hornets have scored.

— Did you know? Baker has started the season 3-0 for the first time since 2014.

— Coachspeak: ”Offensively, Josh did another fantastic job managing the offense. Bryce (Cain) had some big plays downfield. He is so reliable, especially on a couple of third downs that keep some drives moving for us.” — Normand.

— They said it: “Hard work and listening to what the coaches say, trusting the guys around me, it’s working so far this season.” — Flowers.

— Next week: Baker (3-0, 1-0) plays at Foley, while Davidson (1-1, 0-1) hosts Daphne.
