Baby formula recall: 145,000 cans possibly contaminated, FDA says

Two batches of a plant-based baby formula have been recalled due to possible health risk, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced.

Maker Reckitt said it was recalling two select batches of ProSobee 12.9 oz. Simply Plant-Based Infant Formula due to the possibility to cross contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii. All of the products have tested negative for the bacteria and no adverse reactions have been reported but the company said it conducting the recall out of “an abundance of caution.”

Cronobacter bacteria can cause severe, life-threatening infections or meningitis. Symptoms of sepsis and meningitis may include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice (yellow skin and whites of the eyes), grunting breaths and abnormal movements.

The recalled products were manufactured between August and September 2022 and distributed through retail stores nationwide. The batches in question can be identified by the number on the bottom of the can –  ZL2HZF and ZL2HZZ both with a UPC Code of 300871214415 and a “Use By Date” of “1 Mar 2024.
