Authorities trying ID man found dead outside Birmingham motel; jewelry included red flowered earring

Authorities are trying to identify a man found dead last month on the sidewalk of a Birmingham motel.

The discovery was made at 5:49 a.m. on March 24 in front of the Tourway Inn at 11th Street North and Sixth Avenue North. The man was pronounced dead on the scene a short time later.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s office said an autopsy found no evidence of trauma or foul play. The cause of death is pending further lab studies.

A nationwide fingerprint search did not turn up an identity.

The coroner’s office released photos of jewelry found with the man. That jewelry included one medium-size red hoop earring with assorted colored flowers, a silver metal ring, a grey spiral-shaped elastic wrist band, and a tan elastic beaded wrist band with a brown wooden pendant that was inscribed “Hustle, Pray, Eat.”

The man was a Black male in his late 20s or early 30s. He was 5-feet, 6-inches tall and weighed 191 pounds. He had black medium length hair with tight curls, a black short mustache and goatee.

Both ears were pierced, Yates said.

The man had two tattoos on his upper right arm that read, “Demita Joe” in script and a silhouette of a woman with a rose and stars.

He was wearing a white, grey and red neck scarf, a black neck scarf, a black vest, black shorts, black underwear, black socks and black shoes.
