Authorities search lake for Albertville man who tried to rescue dog

Authorities are searching for an Albertville man who they said did not resurface on Friday after trying to rescue a dog at Lake Guntersville. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency identified the man as Jeffrey S. Abston, 65.

Few details have been released, but ALEA Sgt. Jeremy Burkett said Abston left a pontoon boat at about 8 p.m. on Friday to help rescue a dog in the water and never resurfaced. The incident happened in the South Sauty area of Lake Guntersville, near Robert Davis Road in Jackson County.

Troopers with ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division responded and are working with local agencies in a search and recovery effort. Assisting are the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Rescue Squad, Cherokee County Rescue Squad, Langston Fire Department, Scottsboro Search and Rescue, and Guntersville Rescue Squad.
