An inmate at the Etowah County Detention Center died overnight, according to authorities.

Sheriff Jonathon Horton on Tuesday said the inmate was found in distress during a nighttime security check. Medical staff at the jail started care immediately and an ambulance was called.

Lifesaving measures, however, were unsuccessful and the inmate was pronounced dead.

The inmate’s identity has not been released but Horton said the inmate was from Michigan.

Per policy, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office was called as an outside agency to investigate.

The body has been transported to the state forensic lab in Huntsville for examination.

Any evidence will then be presented to the Etowah County District Attorney’s Office.
