Auburn’s program-record streak of AP poll appearances ends at 32

For the first time since the end of the 2020-21 season, Auburn is unranked in the AP poll.

Bruce Pearl’s team saw its program-record streak of 32 consecutive weeks ranked in the top-25 end when the Week 14 AP poll was released Monday. Auburn, which was ranked 25th in last week’s rankings, dropped out of the top-25 after splitting its two games last week and falling to 17-6 on the year and 7-3 in SEC play.

Auburn’s fall from the rankings comes after the Tigers dropped three of their last four games overall. Auburn lost back-to-back games at home against Texas A&M and then on the road at West Virginia before bouncing back last Wednesday with a 21-point blowout of Georgia at Neville Arena in the program’s best offensive performance in years. Auburn followed it up with a 46-43 loss at then-No. 2 Tennessee in a defensive slugfest at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The Tigers turned in one of their worst offensive performances in years, but they nearly came away with a major road upset thanks to a herculean defensive performance against one of the nation’s top teams. Auburn held Tennessee to 27 percent shooting and just 9 percent from beyond the arc while holding the Vols to their lowest scoring output of the season — on their own court, no less. Auburn’s upset bid fell just short, as Wendell Green Jr. missed a potential game-tying 3-point attempt in the closing seconds on a controversial final play that saw a no-call from officials despite a considerable amount of contact on Green by Tennessee big man Olivier Nkamhoua.

Although Auburn fell out of the rankings, it was third among “others receiving votes” in the Week 14 poll. Only two SEC teams are ranked in the latest AP poll: Alabama, which moved up to No. 3 in the rankings, and Tennessee, which dropped to No. 6 after a week in which it lost at Florida and then beat Auburn in Knoxville, Tenn.

Auburn’s streak of 32 consecutive weeks in the AP poll started with last year’s preseason poll. The Tigers will have a chance to climb back into the rankings this week, as they travel to College Station, Texas, to take on Texas A&M on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before hosting third-ranked Alabama on Saturday at Neville Arena. Tipoff against the Tide is set for 1 p.m., with ESPN’s College GameDay broadcasting from the Plains that morning ahead of the rivalry game.
