Auburn’s NFL single-season bests

Auburn’s NFL single-season bests

As a Pro Bowler for the Los Angeles Rams in the 1960 NFL season, split end Jim “Red” Phillips caught eight touchdown passes. The next season, Phillips was an All-Pro pick as he led the NFL in receptions and recorded a 1,000-yard season.

In both cases, Phillips recorded the highest total for those stats of any Auburn alumnus to that point in NFL history. Other former Auburn standouts have surpassed Phillips’ 78 receptions and 1,092 receiving yards of 1961 in subsequent seasons. But his eight TD receptions have remained the standard for Auburn’s NFL players – matched by New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton in 2019 but not bettered in the 62 seasons since Phillips did it.

Phillips’ touchdown-reception mark is the oldest remaining superlative among the single-season statistical performances by former Auburn players in the NFL.

Slayton’s name isn’t the newest on the list. Las Vegas Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson tied the points mark and set a field-goal high for ex-Tigers in 2021.

Some of the Auburn bests are newer by necessity. Not all individual stats have been recorded for all or most of the NFL’s existence. The sack records date from 1960, tackles from 1987, solo tackles from 1994 and tackles for loss, forced fumbles and passes defended from 1999.

With those limitations, here are the single-season bests for Auburn alumni in the NFL:
