Auburn’s Brian Battie recently took his first steps since May shooting, family says

The family of Auburn running back Brian Battie posted a promising update to its GoFundMe campaign on Saturday, writing that Battie is showing “daily progress” in physical, occupational and speech therapy as he continues to recover from being shot in the head during a shooting in Sarasota, Florida on May 18.

Saturday’s update was highlighted by the news of Battie recently having taken his first steps with a cane.

“I am overjoyed to share an inspiring moment in Brian’s journey. After facing the immense challenge of rehabbing after his type of brain injury, without knowing if Brian would walk again, he has achieved something incredible, Brian took his first steps with a cane,” Battie’s family wrote in the update.

Court documents filed against the suspected shooter, Darryl Brookins Jr., who was arrested four days after the shooting that injured Battie and killed his older brother Tommie Battie IV, initially stated Brian Battie was facing a possible prognosis of “permanent paralysis.”

“Witnessing this milestone filled our heart with indescribable happiness and pride. It’s a testament to Brian’s unwavering strength, resilience, and determination,” the Battie family wrote in the update. “This road hasn’t been easy, but with each small step forward, he has shown us the power of perseverance and courage.”

In the update, Battie’s family went on to express gratitude for Brian Battie’s care team at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

“The progress Brian has made under SMH’s care has been nothing short of remarkable. The expertise, patience, and genuine compassion have been instrumental in Brian’s recovery journey,” the Battie family wrote. “Watching him achieve milestones and regain strength has been a testament to their dedication and skills as Dr’s, nurses and therapist.”

The family added that Dr. Fine, who did Brian Battie’s brain surgery, recently paid Brian Battie a visit and was able to answer some of his questions.

“(Dr. Fine) sat and talked to Brian and answered some great questions Brian had. Brian was in complete awe when he left and thrilled that he was able to meet the man who saved his life,” the family wrote. “Dr. Fine confirmed that he also believed that God had the final say when the outcome did not seem promising.”

Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze has said he continues to get frequent updates from the Battie family and used a bit of his time at the podium during SEC Media Days to mention Brian Battie’s recovery.

“By the way, our prayers are still with Brian Battie and his family as he’s still recovering from his incident that happened this summer,” Freeze said at the podium Thursday.
