Auburn’s Keionte Scott named SEC special teams player of the week

Keionte Scott’s teammates credit him for sucking the life out of Arkansas’ Razorback Stadium on Saturday afternoon when Scott returned a Max Fletcher punt 74 yard to the end zone — a moment head coach Hugh Freeze says he predicted.

“After Keionte Scott scored the punt return. I think everybody seen that,” said Auburn Jack linebacker Jalen McLeod, who was named SEC’s defensive player of the week Monday. “We took them out the game and the crowd out the game.”

And evidently, the SEC agreed as Scott was named the SEC’s special teams player of the week on Monday.

Scott’s punt return touchdown happened after the Auburn defense forced Arkansas to go three-and-out in the Razorbacks’ first possession of the game. It was Auburn’s first punt return for a touchdown since 2014, when Quan Bray raced 55 yards down the field for a score against Louisiana Tech.

“My main focus on punt return is being able to get my eyes down to scan the field and see where the hole is,” Scott said after Saturday’s 48-10 win over Arkansas. “After receiving some great blocks from my teammates, I visualize being able to see the hole, hit the hole, stay vertical and get into the end zone.”
