Auburn‘s Johni Broome named to preseason All-SEC first team, Tigers picked to finish sixth

Auburn men’s basketball center Johni Broome was named to the preseason All-SEC first team by media members in a poll released by the conference Tuesday.

Broome was one of seven players selected to the first team along with Alabama’s Grant Nelson, Arkansas’ Trevon Brazile, Kentucky’s Justin Edwards, Mississippi State’s Tolu Smith and Texas A&M’s Wade Taylor IV.

Taylor was named the SEC preseason player of the year. No other Auburn player was selected.

Auburn was picked to finish sixth in the SEC standings. Tennessee was picked to win the league with Texas A&M second, Arkansas third, Kentucky fourth, Alabama fifth and Auburn sixth.

Broome is entering his second season at Auburn after transferring from Morehead State where he played two years. He started 33 games for Auburn last season and averaged 14.2 points per game along with 8.4 rebounds per game and just over two blocks per game. He was named to the All-SEC second team at the end of last season.

Once again, Broome is expected to be the star player on a bit of a new-look Auburn roster. Auburn could potentially have three new starters around Broome compared to last year’s team.

Auburn went unranked in the preseason AP top 25 poll released Monday, but did receive 27 voting points which put Auburn in a tie with Virginia for what is effectively the No. 31 ranking. Auburn received the sixth most votes of SEC teams. No. 9 Tennessee was the highest-ranked SEC team.

Broome, forward Jaylin Williams and head coach Bruce Pearl will speak to reporters Wednesday in Mountain Brook, Alabama, just outside of Birmingham, for SEC basketball media day on Wednesday.
