Auburn womenâs basketball to retire DeWanna Bonnerâs No. 24 jersey
For the fifth time in program history, the Auburn Tigers’ women’s basketball team will raise a jersey to the rafters of Neville Arena — this time it’ll be the No. 24 jersey, honoring Auburn’s all-time leading scorer, DeWanna Bonner.
Bonner, 36, played for the Tigers from 2005-09 after coming to The Plains by way of Fairfield. and was a two-time all-American and the SEC’s Player of the Year in 2009. Bonner’s 716 scored points in 2009 sits as the most scored in one season in program history. She was also a McDona;d’s and WBCA All-American at Fairfield as well as the Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior.
Scoring 2,162 points during her time at Auburn, Bonner stands as the program’s leading scorer, while also ranking third in rebounds (1,047), seventh in blocks (139), first in made free throws (600) and fourth in scoring average at 17.2 points per game.
After her senior season with the Tigers, Bonner was a fifth overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft, landing with the Phoenix Mercury. Bonner won the WNBA championship with the Mercury in 2009 and 2014.
In 14 seasons with the WNBA, Bonner has gone on to cement herself in the professional record books as her 6,881 career points ranks sixth in league history. Bonner has also been named a WNBA All-State five times, an All-WNBA selection twice and has been named Sixth Woman of the Year three times.
Bonner currently plays for the Connecticut Sun after being traded in 2020. In the 2023 season, Bonner led her team in scoring as she averaged 17.4 points per game and chipped in 5.6 rebounds per game.
Bonner will return to Neville Arena to watch her jersey head up to the rafters on Jan. 21 as the Auburn Tigers host the Alabama Crimson Tide for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
