Auburn, UAB alumni join NFL practice squads
Almost every player waived during the NFL’s roster reduction to reach the regular-season limit of 53 players who gets signed for practice-squad duty winds up rejoining the team that cut him.
Former Auburn linebacker Chandler Wooten is an example. He’s back with Carolina on its practice squad after being waived by the Panthers, the NFL team has announced.

But it doesn’t happen every time as Gerrit Prince shows after signing on Friday. The former UAB tight end has joined the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad after the Jacksonville Jaguars waived him.
Of the 38 players from Alabama high schools and colleges who are now on NFL rosters as practice-squad members, 35 are with the teams that released them earlier in the week.
Prince is the second of the three exceptions to sign with the Chiefs. Kansas City also got former Samford wide receiver Montrell Washington after the Denver Broncos waived him.
The other exception was former Alabama offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood, who was waived by the Chicago Bears but is on the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad.
Thirteen of the practice-squad members with Alabama football roots are undrafted rookies, but that designation does not fit Wooten or Prince.
Wooten was an undrafted rookie last year. But after starting the season on the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad, he saw nine games of special-teams duty for the Panthers in 2022, and he had survived the initial cut to 53 players on Tuesday. But when Carolina was awarded three players on Wednesday who had been waived by other teams, the Panthers needed to clear three spots on their roster, and Wooten was waived to create one of them.
Prince also has a year in the NFL, although he did not play in a regular-season game. Prince caught on with the Jaguars as an undrafted rookie last season and spent 2022 on Jacksonville’s practice squad.

Each NFL team can have a 16-player practice squad. Ten must be rookies or second-year players. The practice-squad players practice with the active-roster players, but they cannot play in games, with two exceptions.
Every game, two practice-squad players can be elevated to the active roster. After the game, they revert to the practice squad without having to pass through waivers.
A player can be elevated three times during the season. If elevated a fourth time, he must be signed to the 53-player roster.
Practice-squad players with two or fewer seasons of experience receive a weekly salary of $12,000. Players with more experience have some negotiating room. They must be paid at least $16,100 per week but cannot be paid more than $20,600 per week while practice-squad members.
