Auburn to offer waived fees, “quick review” for displaced Birmingham-Southern students

Auburn announced “expedited assistance” for displaced Birmingham-Southern students looking for a new school including waiving application fees and a “quick review” of applications, according to a Thursday press release.

The process will be to help students enroll in Auburn for the summer and fall 2024 semesters.

“True to Auburn’s land-grant mission, we are fully committed to assisting BSC students who would like to transfer to Auburn,” Auburn President Christopher B. Roberts said. “We will demonstrate our support for these students by providing the opportunity to remain in Alabama and continue in their academic pursuits at Auburn.”

Auburn is one of several colleges and universities in Alabama making a pitch for the Birmingham-Southern students. The University of Alabama system also announced waived fees and expedited application review at all of its campuses, similar to that of Auburn’s announcement. Spring Hill College in Mobile is offering a $5,000 scholarship to transferring Birmingham-Southern Students.

On Tuesday, Birmingham-Southern announced it will close on May 31 after it failed to get a necessary state loan. The school did not have enough funding to continue operations without it.

“Kinda stunned all day, although it’s like somebody passing and you know they’re probably gonna pass, but until it happens, you know,” Auburn baseball coach and Birmingham-Southern graduate Butch Thompson said Tuesday. “I was sad about that today.”

Auburn will offer “exclusive virtual appointments” for Birmingham-Southern students interested in transferring. Appointments can be scheduled here.

Auburn will also be part of a transfer fair at Birmingham-Southern set for April 5.

Auburn asks Birmingham-Southern students interested in transferring to apply as soon as possible. Students can contact Auburn’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 334-844-6425.
