Auburn swimmer Reid Mikuta indicted on rape charge

A top swimmer for Auburn University has been indicted on a rape charge.

A Lee County grand jury indicted Christopher “Reid” Mikuta, 21, on Sept. 9, according to court records made public Wednesday. Auburn police also on Wednesday announced the indictment.

Police said they began their investigation in December 2022 after they received a report from female stating she was raped by an acquaintance on Oct. 9.

According to the indictment, Mikuta had sexual intercourse with the victim while she was incapable of consent by reason of being physically helpless or mentally incapacitated.

Mikuta was identified as the suspect and, after an investigation by police, the case was submitted to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office for presentation to a grand jury, which handed down the indictment nearly two weeks ago.

Mikuta surrendered to authorities on Tuesday. He remains held without bond until a hearing can be schedules.

Lee County Circuit Judge Christopher Hughes earlier today recused himself from the case because his law clerk is married to an Auburn University Title IX investigator with knowledge of the case.

Mikuta, who was still listed on Auburn University’s website midday Wednesday, has previously been named SEC Swimmer of the Week and an Olympic Trial Qualifier.
