Auburn still in search of ‘no-brainer’ quarterback target in transfer portal
Hugh Freeze sees the notifications in his mentions tab on Twitter.
Every time a quarterback has entered the transfer portal since the post-spring window opened on April 15, Freeze’s mentions are flooded with Auburn fans tagging him in hopes of grabbing his attention and alerting him to a potential target for the Tigers. So far, though, Freeze has yet to find a transfer quarterback to his liking to enter the fray this summer.

Spring transfer portal window “quite a bit slower” than anticipated for Hugh Freeze, Auburn
“Truthfully, I haven’t seen one yet that’s just, ‘Bam, that’s the no-brainer, and he’s ahead of the ones we have,’” Freeze told reporters Thursday night before the AMBUSH tour stop in Huntsville. “I know some (fans) may not want to hear that because they think it’s just an instant fix. I get the tweets’ trust me.
“Every time a quarterback goes in the portal, ‘There he is! There he is!’ Then I watch the film, and I’m like, ‘No, that’s really not the one I’m looking for.’”
Though Freeze has yet to find a quarterback in the transfer portal, that doesn’t mean he’s giving up on the endeavor. The post-spring portal window closes Sunday, and Auburn could still find a graduate transfer to bring in to compete for the starting job this summer, should one that meets Freeze’s criteria become available.
“There could be one that goes in tomorrow or the next day that I’m like, ‘Alright, this one makes sense,’” Freeze said. “So, that’s about as clear as I can put it, I think.”
Just because Freeze is still in search of a quarterback in the transfer portal, it doesn’t mean he’s down on Auburn’s current quarterback room. He said after A-Day that he believes Auburn “can win some games” with the quarterbacks currently on the roster — whether that’s Robby Ashford, T.J. Finley or Holden Geriner. The Tigers also bring in 2023 signee Hank Brown to the position group this summer.
Freeze was upfront in his assessment of Auburn’s quarterbacks throughout the spring as it related to their struggles as well as the areas they made good progress with. Still, it’s early in the quarterback competition, which will Freeze has repeatedly said will continue into fall camp.
As things stand with Auburn’s quarterback room, Ashford — who started the final nine games of the season last fall — finished the spring taking reps with the first-team offense and led the starting group on A-Day, when he won offensive MVP honors for the second consecutive spring game. Finley, who opened last season as the Tigers’ starter and made three starts before redshirting due to a shoulder injury, was second in the rotation for most of spring. A former transfer from LSU, Finley led the second-team offense on A-Day, but he hasn’t ruled out possibly transferring a second time — depending on how the Tigers’ quarterback situation shakes out this summer — since he graduates in June. Geriner, who redshirted last season as a true freshman, turned a corner midway through the spring and was seen taking some first-team reps in practice — and one drive on A-Day.
“I kind of get excited about Holden and Robby and, you know, T.J. and Hank Brown, who’s coming in,” Freeze said. “Does that mean we won’t continue to look?… I’m going to be excited to coach the ones we have and improve them. At the same time, I don’t ever want to be perceived as someone who didn’t say exactly what I was thinking.”
