Auburn report card: Grading the Tigers dominant win over Louisiana-Monroe
With a 24-point lead at the halftime break, the Tigers played a flawless game as they’ll prepare for their final two conference games of the season next.
Auburn moves to 4-6 this season and remains 1-4 in the SEC. Here‘s how we graded Tigers performance:
Offense
Grade: A
Auburn only punted the ball away once in the first half which came in the final minute of the second quarter.
The Tigers totaled 292 yards of first half offense as Cam Coleman led the charge with seven receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
In the closing seconds before halftime, quarterback Payton Thorne connected with Keandre Lambert-Smith for a 30-yard score extending the Tigers lead to 24-0.
Thorne had just eight incompletions through the first two quarters finishing with 286 yards and five total touchdowns.
Coleman and Lambert-Smith both finished with over 100 yards receiving for the Tigers.
Defense
Grade: A-
Every ULM drive in the first half resulted in a punt as they struggled to move the ball on the Tigers defense all afternoon.
The Warhawks were held to 70 total yards of offense at the games midway point averaging 2.8 yards per play.
ULM scored both of its touchdowns in the second half with the last one coming from a busted coverage in the Tigers secondary.
“Yeah, you know, in my mind they held them under 200. You know, I know the last play there was a lot,” High Freeze said postgame. “But I think our defense, besides the one drive in the third quarter, was really, really solid.”
Special Teams
Grade: A+
Auburn made a switch at the kicker position as walk-on Ian Vachon was named the starting place kicker as true freshman Towns McGough handled the kickoff duties.
Vachon connected on a 22 and 26-yard field goal and did not miss any extra point attempts.
Jeremiah Cobb finished with 50 return yards breaking out for a 30-yard run during a second half return.
Coaching
Grade: A
Auburn finished the game with no penalties throughout the contest and one turnover that came from a Walker White fumble.
Overall, the Tigers executed every opportunity they got and gave the Warhawks no opportunity to get into a rhythm.
“So, I thought it was a pretty dominant performance with just a small lapse at the beginning of the third quarter by both sides,” Hugh Freeze said. “I’m just really proud of our kids and our effort and hopefully we gain some confidence headed into these last two huge football games that we have.”
Overall
Grade: A+
Auburn finally found a way to control a game and show its true dominance on offense giving their season slight hope at a possible bowl bid.
Now returning back to Jordan-Hare stadium to host Texas A&M next week, the Tigers look to keep the momentum going for their first primetime matchup.
