Auburn officially returning to Maui Invitational in 2024

Two months after it was initially reported, Auburn is officially heading back to Hawaii.

Bruce Pearl’s team has accepted an invite to the 2024 Maui Invitational, the program announced Tuesday. It will mark Auburn’s first return trip to the annual nonconference showcase since 2018, when the Tigers made their first-ever appearance in the tournament.

“There is simply no other early-season college basketball tournament that rivals the spirit, talent and overall ‘magic’ of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational,” tournament chairman Dave Odom said in a release. “The 2024 field is not only going to bring top tier programs representing eight of the most dominant conferences in the sport, but also fans from all corners of the country. Whether it’s your first time on-island, or you’ve made packing into the historic Lahaina Civic Center an annual tradition, this Tournament experience is on every college basketball fan’s bucket list – and this loaded 2024 field is going to make it hard to resist.”

Auburn is one of eight teams included in the field for the 2024 event, joining Colorado, Dayton, Iowa State, Memphis, Michigan State, North Carolina and UConn, which just claimed its fifth national championship Monday night. The 2024 tournament will be take place Nov. 25-27 at the Lahaina Civic Center.

All eight teams in the 2024 field have previously participated in the Maui Invitational. Along with Auburn’s trip in 2018, UNC has made eight appearances in the event. Memphis has played in Maui five prior times, while Dayton, Michigan State and UConn have each participated four times. For Iowa State, 2024 will mark the program’s third appearance and first since joining Auburn in the 2018 event. Colorado’s only prior appearance came in 2009.

North Carolina (four times), UConn (twice), Michigan State and Dayton have each won the Maui Invitational in past appearances.

While it remains to be seen what Auburn’s roster will look like for the 2024-25 season, the Tigers currently have the nation’s No. 3 recruiting class for the 2024 cycle, with commitments from five-star point guard Tahaad Pettiford, four-star guard Labaron Philon (the No. 1 player in Alabama) and four-star center Peyton Marshall.

“The goal of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational is and always has been to bring together the top programs in college basketball in one of the most stunning places in the country,” said Tom Valdiserri, the executive vice president of KemperLesnik, which runs the Maui Invitational. “The 2024 field will accomplish that and more. The field includes a variety of iconic programs and coaches, as well as respected up-and-comers. We are confident when we say that the Maui Jim Maui Invitational does not disappoint, and we think fans back home and on-island will be in for an epic few days of college basketball with this stacked field.”
